Help Save The GOP !

Saving The GOP From Itself: Duncan Hunter
Guest editorial by Alexander J Madison, Images added by Red-

The world changed dramatically in 1980 on the day former California Governor Ronald Reagan trounced the hapless Jimmy Carter in the Presidential election. This was perhaps the Democratic Party's and the US media's worst nightmare ever. Not only did America reject the "malaise" of the Carter years, but they embraced a California 'cowboy' who believed that America's best days were yet to come. And Reagan's coattails provided the opportunity for a number of staunch conservatives to invade the halls of congress, among them, a 33 year old Vietnam combat veteran who would prove to be one of President Reagan's most fearless allies, Duncan Hunter.

To liberals, academics and the employees of ABC, CBS, NBC and the New York Times, America had finally settled into the role it was supposed to play with the election of Carter in 1976. That role was to be a humble, accommodating nation on the world stage, no better or worse or assertive than other nations. We had 'lost' the Vietnam War and it was time to lose our "inordinate fear of communism". After all, capitalism has many warts, and communism offered an equally 'valid' model on which to base a society, they lectured. Other countries' national interests were as important as ours. The United Nations was the way forward to forming a more peaceful and hopeful and sharing world. The fall of South Vietnam was no cause for alarm, rather Yankee imperialism was the biggest culprit on the world stage. The Cold War was mostly America's fault and besides, the USSR was here to stay, so America might as well accept that 'fact' and learn to coexist. The communist infiltration in Central America and Africa was in fact just poor peasants demanding justice, and if Cuba and the USSR were helping them, so be it; justice is justice, they told us. Eastern Europe had 'free' health care for its citizens, after all.

One would think that the minority party during this period, the Republicans, would have been united and working overtime to save this nation from its drift into 'former superpower' status. Instead, a large portion of the party had come to accept not only the inevitability of coexistence with the USSR, but the inevitability of socialism in our own domestic policies. Indeed, it was Richard Nixon who swelled the size of the Federal bureaucracy with his creation of the EPA, OSHA, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. Nixon and Henry Kissinger were also the masterminds of the détente policy, a misguided attempt to appease the Soviets. His successor, Gerald Ford, continued the détente policy and continued the march towards Rockefeller republicanism, even going so far to name liberal Nelson Rockefeller as his Vice President. Ford's full throated support of the Equal Rights Amendment is all one needs to know about the direction of the GOP leadership in the 1970s.

Then the cowboy rode in. After two successful terms as California governor, Reagan nearly stole the GOP nomination four years earlier. Had he done so, perhaps the stain of the Carter Administration could have been avoided. Nevertheless, it was a 'new day' in America in November of 1980. There had not been such an optimistic, confident, visionary and conservative man elected president in many decades. Even powerful GOP opponents such as George Herbert Walker Bush (who labeled Reagan's economic plan "voodoo economics") and Howard Baker (who managed both Ford's and Bush's rival campaigns against the Gipper) came around to support this visionary, at least on the surface. But the nuts and bolts of Reagan's success was not due to GHWB, who was his mostly silent VP, or the moderate Baker, who served as Reagan's 2nd term Chief of Staff for 17 months. It came from Reagan's fellow true believers who went toe to toe each day with the liberals in power. Chief among them was Duncan Hunter.

Duncan Hunter has always understood the evils of communism. He was once quoted as saying the only place he wanted to see a communist "is on the end of my bayonet". Strong words, but illustrative of a man who understands evil when he see it, and was willing to do all he could to end that evil. Reagan recognized this, and in 1985, he gave young Congressman Hunter, a fellow Californian, the responsibility of leading a delegation to Europe to bring them on board with the vilified Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), which Hunter had helped ramrod through the Congress. It worked. Even Jack Kemp, no foreign policy lightweight, credits Hunter and Henry Hyde for leading the way on SDI funding in the House. And Hunter has not relented since. He has staked out not only missile defenses as his territory, but our entire military and defense structure as areas of expertise. It was Hunter who was largely responsible for saving missile defense from certain death by neglect during the Clinton years, and his heroic efforts to do so put him at odds with the political appointees in the Pentagon. It was certainly not the first or last time that Hunter would lock horns with the Pentagon brass, and as has been the case each time, Hunter was right.

Obviously, Congressman Hunter shared Reagan's "we win, they lose" vision of communism and the absolute necessity of SDI. One could argue that most republicans did, since most voted Reagan's way. However, the 'go along to get along' GOP required strong-armed leadership, and Hunter stepped in to fill that void.

A perfect illustration of Hunter's leadership and vision on these matters occurred in 1987. President Reagan walked away from the summit in Reykjavik, Iceland without any agreements with Soviet Premier Gorbachev, a summit that had very high expectations worldwide. When the media found out it was Reagan's 'fault' – he refused to put SDI on the table – they went ballistic. The press in the US and around the globe heaped scornful article after scornful article on the President. The Democrats in congress were equally apoplectic, accusing Reagan of setting back US-Soviet relations by decades. The hysteria carried over into the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), of which Hunter was a member. Though nearly equal in numbers of Democrats and Republicans, a 13 member HASC subcommittee released a scathing assessment of the Reykjavik negotiations. "The result has been 'the appearance of confusion and frustration', a worried NATO alliance, and the retrospective possibility that 'the United States was `snookered' by a clever Soviet scheme' to gain unbalanced U.S. concessions or to fix the blame on Reagan for failure of the negotiations", reported the Chicago Sun Times. Les Aspin, Chairman of the committee, added that the summit meeting became "the textbook case on how the superpowers should NOT negotiate."

Also, according to the Sun Times, "One member of the 13-member panel, conservative Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), filed a sharply worded six-page dissent, calling the report 'unprofessional' and a 'celebration of form over substance' dominated by 'political sniping.'" In other words, Hunter knew what Reagan did in Iceland: He put the Soviet Union in a very tight corner. With hindsight, most everyone has since agreed that it was Gorbachev, not Reagan, who got snookered. The Berlin wall came crashing down 2 years later. But only Hunter, amongst the supposed hawks (democrat and republican) on the HASC, had the vision to see clearly what was happening at the time. Hunter went to the mat for Reagan when even his own party was in despair. And Hunter was right.

In addition to helping clear the way for Reagan's defense spending and USSR policies, the San Diego Congressman also supported Reagan's historic tax cuts, his efforts to undermine communism in Central and South America, his rough handling of the United Nations, the bombing of Libya (with some particularly harsh words for France), and the attempts to shrink the federal government. Hunter even defended Reagan, as well as Oliver North, during the Iran Contra scandal.

Some have painted Hunter as just a loyal foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution. After all, it was Reagan's coattails that brought Hunter into the House. Loyalty is nice, but Reagan was the only visionary, and Hunter just a follower, so the logic goes. However, that perception is easily shattered. During the 1986 debates over the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), most politicians from both parties supported the idea of providing amnesty to millions of illegal aliens in exchange for 'tougher' enforcement of workplace rules and border security. Hunter, from the US-Mexico border district in California, knew better. Hunter argued that without a sealed border, the amnesty provisions would only lead to a flood of new illegal aliens waiting to catch the next amnesty wave. The bill passed and Reagan signed it, stating that "The legalization provisions in this act will go far to improve the lives of a class of individuals who now must hide in the shadows, without access to many of the benefits of a free and open society." Sounds vaguely familiar, huh? Hunter rejected such arguments and time has shown Hunter to be correct. Reagan later regretted the amnesty bill and Hunter spent the next 20 years doing everything he could, trying to slow the stampede he predicted would come.

So it comes as no surprise that Duncan Hunter has been the loudest and sanest voice in Congress since the 1980s regarding illegal immigration. Not only did Hunter force the Clinton Administration to build the San Diego border fence, but he also has made numerous proposals to reverse the sovereignty usurping, boondoggle immigration policies of both GOP and democratic administrations. Some were successful, and others were stifled by members of his own party. Over the years, Hunter forced significant increases in the number of Border Patrol (BP) agents, earmarked money for more detention facilities, wrote legislation to strip away all benefits for illegal aliens and punish 'sanctuary cities', and in 2006, single-handedly penned the Secure Fence Act, a bill signed by President Bush to extend the San Diego double border fence through the smuggling corridors of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. In addition, Hunter has current legislation pending to force congressional oversight over the Executive Branch's attempts to establish a Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) with Mexico and Canada, a bill to free two BP agents who wounded an illegal alien narcotics smuggler, and amendments to stop all funding of the proposed NAFTA superhighway and to abort the program which will allow Mexican truckers unfettered access to American roads. Duncan Hunter is the visionary, and slowly but surely, the GOP is starting to follow. Even immigration milquetoasts like Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson are beginning to parrot some of Hunter's words, after spending careers sounding more like liberal democrats on the subject.

Other arguments made against Hunter concede that he has been a leader on National Security and illegal immigration issues, but that such accomplishments are not enough for a Presidential candidate. But a closer examination of Hunter's record, statements, and causes over his career reveal that it is he who has far greater presidential timber than his GOP rivals.

For example, in 1994, while Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney were singing the praises of the phony 'assault weapons ban' (AWB), in Rudy's case even lobbying on behalf of the Clinton Administration, Hunter was in the trenches fighting to kill it. He proposed the Hunter-Brewster crime bill as a pork-free and AWB free alternative to the omnibus Clinton directed bill. Hunter's version barely lost due to the 'moderates' in the party siding with Clinton, Rudy and Mitt. Many republicans supported the AWB, but Hunter had the vision to know that gun control was dead end street, not to mention ridiculously unconstitutional.

In 2000, after several years of annually renewing China on our country's Most Favored Nation trade partner list, the Clinton Administration decided to propose making that status permanent. Permanent Most Favored Nation status (also called Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR)) was supported by most of the Republicans in the House and the Senate. They largely kowtowed to the big business and China lobbies running through the halls of Congress. Duncan Hunter had been sounding the alarm bells about communist China for many years. He illustrated example after example of China's corruption, underhanded tactics, military buildup and its treatment of the United States as a foe. Yet the dollar signs carried the day, despite the overwhelming evidence of China's robust espionage in the US, saber rattling over Taiwan, and its abysmal treatment of political and religious 'dissidents'. The GOP leaders simply downplayed its military and technological gains and insisted that trade would open the dialog with the communists and foment reform. They largely sided with Clinton, and it became law. Cold water was quickly tossed on the notion of reform in 2001 with the downing of a US reconnaissance plane and the subsequent hostage situation.

In 2007, it is glaringly obvious that the China appeasers were dead wrong, and that Hunter was right. From the $233 billion trade surplus with the US in 2006, to the relentless pirating of US software and other intellectual property, to the purchase of cutting edge Soviet made weapons systems, to its arming of terrorists in Iraq, to its most recent wave of persecution of Christians, China has proven to be the unworthy and untrustworthy adversary that Hunter has claimed all along. Hunter's rivals for the GOP nomination, John McCain, Sam Brownback and Fred Thompson all ignored Hunter's warnings and signed on with the Clinton machine.

When it comes to the protection of US sovereignty, no one has been as stalwart as Duncan Hunter. Most of the GOP has followed the path of 'free trade', as delineated by organizations such as the Wall Street Journal and the CATO Institute. Congressman Hunter saw the problem with this notion many years ago. Prior to the General Agreements on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) morphing into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995, GATT was a system of negotiations between countries, often led by the US, to reduce tariffs, fostering freer trade amongst member nations. Something Adam Smith (and Duncan Hunter) could generally agree with. Nations could and did opt out of GATT agreements when it went against their national interest, and later sign on when they felt it was in their interests. GATT was non binding, other than the pressure member nations brought to bear for 'violations'. The creation of the WTO changed the game. Now, negotiations and enforcement were handed over to a new supra-national entity. No longer did the US have the ability to lock horns directly with a trade partner over a particular issue. Instead, the mechanisms and personnel for trade disputes were handed over to the WTO bureaucracy. Aside from the absolute fact that international bureaucracies seldom favor the United State's position, making our entry into the WTO absurd on its face, the surrender of sovereignty over our international commerce is anathema to Duncan Hunter's view of our constitution.

The WTO rejected President Bush's 2001 corporate tax cuts for US exporters and forced the US government to rescind them, calling them an unfair subsidy! Hunter told Human Events in a 2006:

"We have the right in our nation's interest, to abandon WTO in whole or in part, just as any nation has a right to abandon its international agreements. I think it's intolerable to allow the world trading system to have voted in essentially a subsidy directed at one nation-the United States-a subsidy on their end and a tariff on American exports to those nations, to lock that in as being allowed under WTO, and to not allow us under our system of taxation to effect reciprocity."

Once again, the rest of the GOP is slowly catching on, that surrender of our national sovereignty to any world body is not only stupid, but unconstitutional. Whether it's called the UN, the International Criminal Court, or the WTO, Hunter asserts that America must retain its ultimate authority to make decisions regarding American interests. As Ronald Reagan stated, "We are always willing to be trade partners but never trade patsies."

So now, fellow Republicans, it is another time for choosing. Shall we elect a man who has supported our losses in sovereignty to international bodies, or supported stripping away our constitutionally guaranteed First or Second Amendment rights, or turned a blind eye as our rival China gained unprecedented wealth and power at our expense, or just recently discovered that America really does need to halt the illegal alien stampede, or spent his career in the Rockefeller wing of the party only to blow the dust off of his Reagan 101 textbook for the election? Or shall we support the rarest of rarities, a man of vision, who intends to repeat Reagan's feat – of saving the GOP from itself, and saving America in the process?

An Open Letter to the Iowa GOP

HUNTER HEADER

Open Letter to the Iowa GOP Choose Wisely, Choose Hunter

Guest Editorial

Alexander J. Madison - December 31, 2007

Dear Iowegians,

Every presidential election season, your state has the opportunity to help shape the election going forward. Unfortunately, too many times, you have selected a dud during the Iowa Caucuses. In 1976, you picked Gerald Ford, proponent of the ERA and abortion rights, over a very conservative Ronald Reagan. In 1980, you chose a very moderate Bush over Reagan. And twice you picked a milquetoast named Bob Dole. Granted, the choices are sometimes between dud and duddier, but this year is different. This year you have a chance to select a rock-ribbed conservative Reaganite to make up for not choosing the original Reaganite when you had the chance. The name is Duncan Hunter.

Congressman Duncan Hunter is a representative from California's 52nd legislative district. Mr. Hunter put his college career on hold to volunteer with the 173rd Airborne Rangers to fight the communists in Vietnam. (pictured above on left with fellow Rangers in Vietnam) Like Reagan, Hunter believes that war was not only very winnable, but was indeed a "noble cause". And the killing fields that followed our departure from that conflict are a bold testament to their vision over the head-in-the-sand lack of vision (which continues to this day) from the defeatist democrats and RINOs.

Duncan Hunter also entered office with Reagan in 1981, at the ripe old age of 32. He immediately was able to join the Armed Services Committee in Congress, where he has remained to this day, as former Chairmen, and current Ranking Republican. It was in large part due to Mr. Hunter's efforts, teaming with folks like Jack Kemp and Henry Hyde, that Reagan was able to ramrod our historic military buildup through Congress in the 80s, which revitalized every branch of our Armed Services. Jack Kemp even credits Hunter with being the go-to guy for strong-arming the very controversial 'Star Wars' Strategic Defense Initiative through the House. The results of that persistence and vision is paying off in spades, despite the howls of leftists worldwide, as we today have working missile defense systems either in field, or soon to be fielded; including laser based systems for which Reagan was mercilessly ridiculed by the ignorant 'academics' and the press. Hunter was and is perhaps the staunchest anti-communist to sit in Congress. He was the leader most responsible, aside from Reagan, for stemming the commie-creep in Central America during the 1980s, and his disdain for communism has never ebbed.

Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate that realizes what China is up to, both militarily with its rapid armament increases, and economically, with its long term strategy to undermine the United States' industrial base. Hunter is dead set against the 'one-way', idiotic trade deal we have with the Chinese, will put a quick end to further technology transfers to the communist nation, and will build up our own military to the point that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be nothing short of a quick suicide mission for communism. All the other candidates tip toe around the issue of China. Hunter plans to step on their throat.

When it comes to the 2nd Amendment, the 10th Amendment, lowering taxes, fighting the ACLU and political correctness, standing firm against the gay agenda, and sweeping out useless bureaucrats and bureaucracies from the federal government, Duncan Hunter is the only choice.

Unlike John McCain and Mitt Romney, Hunter won't find anything in the Constitution to justify supporting a ban on 'assault weapons' or 'cheap handguns'. Hunter has a perfect lifetime record with the NRA and the Gun Owners of America. Both Mitt and McCain are liberals in this arena.

Unlike Fred Thompson, Hunter won't have to lie about previous pro-choice sympathies. Unlike Fred, Hunter has a perfectly consistent record on the life of the unborn, and has sponsored legislation for many, many years to give full constitutional protection to the unborn – legislation that Fred does not support.

Unlike McCain and Thompson, Hunter certainly will not run roughshod over the 1st Amendment for the sake of 'campaign finance reform'. And Hunter will work to ditch the last vestiges of McCain-Feingold-Thompson, if the courts don't do it first.

Unlike Mike Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson, Hunter did not and does not buy into the global warming nonsense in any way, shape or form. The only guarantee we have of avoiding a binding, sovereignty usurping, international treaty on global warming is to place a President in power who does not believe the GW alarmism and does not believe in sovereignty usurping international treaties.

Unlike Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, Hunter does not have some convoluted explanation for why the socialized medicine experiments in Massachusetts (RomneyCare) and Arkansas (ARKids) are a good thing that deserves replication nationally. Indeed, Hunter wants to get government out of the way and reduce the regulations on health insurance by killing off mandates and regulations.

Unlike Mike Huckabee, Hunter will not be contemplating how to mandate and enforce a nationwide ban on smoking in public places, nor will he be scheming to introduce more arts and music and healthy snacks into the nation's public schools. The NEA, who apparently like Mr. Huckabee, despise Congressman Hunter – a genuine supporter of school choice.

Unlike Rudy Giuliani, Hunter does not have to pretend he is a conservative. A man who sued 26 firearms manufacturers to essentially put them out of business has no business seeking the office of the Presidency on the GOP ticket, unless gun control, abortion rights, gay 'rights', and eminent domain abuse are now part of the GOP platform.

Unlike Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson, John McCain, and Mitt Romney, Hunter does not have to lie through his teeth when it comes to his record on illegal immigration. While it is hilarious to see these guys try to 'Out –Tancredo Tancredo' on the issue, only one guy truly does out-Tancredo the Colorado Congressman. While Duncan Hunter has sponsored or cosponsored 85 bills and amendments to stop illegal immigration in this country dead in its tracks, not one of these others lifted a finger during their careers, and range from bad to worse on the issue. While 'The Road to Des Moines' and last springs citizen revolt led these supposed conservatives to finally see the light – at least in rhetoric, Hunter has been fighting the RINOS and dems on this for 27 years. Hunter wrote the border fence bill (recently defanged by the RINOS), and Hunter is the ONLY one who has vowed to actively deport those currently squatting here illegally.

And finally, Duncan Hunter is the most experienced in warfare, defense systems, foreign policy and the security of our nation. If we are intent on defeating the islamists ASAP- without worrying about offending anyone, keeping terrorists out of our country, and rising to meet the future threats posed by the China-Russia-Iran-Venezuela axis, then we better elect a Reaganite this time around.

If not, we may have to put up with an idiot who thinks we need to close Gitmo and end waterboarding because the world disapproves (Huckabee, McCain), or someone who thinks we just need to be more humble and accommodating on the world stage (Huckabee), or someone who can't figure out that enriching China is a fools errand (Fred, Mitt, McCain), or someone who has no clue about our military needs and capabilities and would not know an IED from an IUD (Rudy, Huckabee, Mitt).

The choice is clearer than it has been since 1980. Don't let history pass you by again.

Most Sincerely,

Alexander J. Madison

As always, thanks for your support!

Hunter for President!

From Patriot Post Vol. 08 No. 00; Published 1 January 2008 |

NOTE: A candidate’s Patriot Rating is based on analysis of many factors — their record, experience, capability, character, leadership qualifications and, of course, their ability to read and understand the plain language of our Constitution — and act accordingly. Many voters support candidates on the basis of one or two of the aforementioned qualifiers, which is to say, if your favorite candidate scored lower, it is likely because of qualifiers other than those on which you base your support.

Duncan Hunter Gets "EXCELLENT" Rating on Immigration

NumbersUSA, an immigration reform group, has issued an updated scorecard grading the Republican presidential candidates on their immigration record. Its president, Roy Beck, argues all candidates have a long way to go, especially in opposing amnesty for illegals.

"Overall these [candidates] are pretty disappointing.
Now that Rep. Tom Tancredo has dropped out of the race, only two candidates are left who have vigorous and thorough enough opposition to amnesty to warrant an 'excellent' rating," Mr. Beck explained.

Only two Republicans remain in the "excellent" category:
Duncan Hunter
and Fred Thompson.

"Ron Paul still gets a 'good' rating and could get an 'excellent' if he would make clear how he plans to handle the illegal aliens here if they don't get an amnesty," explained Mr. Beck.

"[Mitt] Romney and [Mike] Huckabee were earning themselves a 'good' rating just a couple of weeks ago. But both went on national TV and hemmed and hawed around amnesty questions, thoroughly confusing their message," stated Mr. Beck, who reduced both of them to "fair."

Over the course of the campaign, Mr. Romney has been criticized for twice employing a landscaper who used illegal immigrants as workers, and Mr. Huckabee has come under fire for supporting tuition aid for illegal immigrants.

Rudy Giuliani and John McCain are in the "bad" category, though Mr. McCain has improved from his previous ranking of "abysmal," where all the Democrat candidates reside.

While not endorsing any candidate, Mr. Beck contends the Democrats are "dancing around" the issue of amnesty, thus "putting themselves at a severe disadvantage to win the fall general election."

The scorecard also addressed other immigration-related issues, such as mandatory workplace verification, increased security at the border and ending sanctuary cities.

NOTE:
Duncan Hunter is the author of the Border Fence Act and is called "The Father of the Border Fence".
His initial construction of the double 15' tall fence which was built near San Diego CA stopped illegal immigration into San Diego by 90% and reduced crime by OVER 50%.
If elected, Hunter has promised to complete the 856 miles of BORDER FENCE in just 6 months.

Seen Common Sense Lately?

Thanks to Russell at Totally Conservative Blog...
COMMON SENSE
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth-records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the
worm; life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't
spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not
children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 -year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended
from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for
reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get
Parental consent to administer Car pool, sun lotion or a band-aid to a
student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became
contraband churches became businesses; and criminals received
better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from
burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman
failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a
little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, truth and trust; his
wife, discretion; his daughter responsibility; and his son, reason.

He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is
To Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If
you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and
do nothing and kissing your happy aXX good by.

Today we have an opportunity to bring Common Sense back to life in this country.
It is time for us to rise up and take our country back by electing Duncan Hunter as President of the United States.

Today, it seems some have forgotten our beginnings. Instead of Americans with a shared vision, we have become a nation divided. We have become a nation of individuals and groups, each with a special interest vision, often without thought for what is best for the nation. We are, however, a nation that at one time had an immutable vision for all. Duncan Hunter is a man that has a vision for the nation, a vision that includes all men and it’s the same vision that our Founding Fathers held for this nation.

So, I say to you, as a Reagan Republican, I will vote for Duncan Hunter and work to put him in the White House 2008. Please take time to give Duncan Hunter another look, as I did. There is much work to be done. Time is short. Let’s begin - in earnest - and may God Bless our efforts.

PS:
I invite you to join the Duncan Hunter team for America at http://www.gohunter08.com/index.asp and help put him in the White House in 2008. I ask you to donate all you can for America and Freedom, donate to the candidacy of Duncan Hunter.

Respectfully,
Russell M. Scott

MSNBC Considering Hunter vs Paul Roundtable?

Tin Foil vs Man of Steel
-red s tater
After apparently being shut out of the upcoming FOX NEWS Republican debate, Ron Paul supporters are urging MSNBC to host a two man round table debate between Libertarian Republican Ron Paul and true Republican Duncan Hunter who was also excluded from the debate scheduled for Jan 6th.

This is a fight that, if it happens, Ron Paul will lose. Duncan Hunter supporters already know the problems with Ron Paul... legalizing all drugs as the answer to the drug problem, pulling all US troops out of Iraq, S. Korea, Japan, Germany and everywhere else on the globe as the answer to foreign policy and defeating radical Islam, not securing the border as the answer to illegal immigration... the list goes on and on and on.
Here is a preview of what that debate might provide... Hunter vs Paul and Kucinich)
Bring it on!
Duncan Hunter would have a real opportunity to connect with any rational thinking true Republican conservatives that may tune in simply for the fight. Paul would only have the opportunity to show more voters why he can't be taken seriously.

Shame on FOX NEWS for excluding both men from the debate, they are depriving voters of the opportunity to discover why Libertarians are not Republicans and from discovering the candidate who has been called "The Republican wing of the Republican Party" and who is also the one candidate LEFTWING LIBERALS FEAR to their very core.

Bring it on MSNBC... bring it on.

Tin Foil vs Man of Steel, my money is on the real deal Duncan Hunter.

What Makes A Leader?

December 28, 2007
Hat tip to Russell at Totally Conservative blog
Hunter passionate about defense, trade and borders...

By JANE NORMAN
REGISTER STAFF WRITER
The Des Moines Register

What makes a leader?
This series examines this year’s presidential candidates through that prism.

Our leadership categories are adapted from standards developed by Fred Greenstein, a Princeton University scholar and author of “The Presidential Difference.”

Greenstein says the modern presidency is so powerful, voters should take careful stock of the strengths and weaknesses candidates might bring to the job — from their psychology, emotional maturity and vision to the way they process information, manage and communicate.

Using Greenstein’s work as a jumping-off point, we assess candidates in the following areas: political skills, communication skills, policy vision, decision-making style and management skills.

POLITICAL SKILLS

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., is making his first presidential bid, but he's no newcomer to politics. He has served 14 terms in Congress, elected in 1980 as part of the Republican landslide that brought President Reagan into office.

"I started this political career in a two-to-one Democrat district where they said Abraham Lincoln couldn't win as a Republican," he said. "I've been in 27 years, and I've never done well by contemplating defeat."

He's never forgotten Reagan's political success and is eager to invoke the late president's legacy.

"I came in with a guy named Ronald Reagan," he said to applause at a "values voter" conference in October.

Polls show Hunter in the low single digits in Iowa, so he is focusing on New Hampshire.

"I think Iowa is a two-man race," he said recently. "I think it's between ... Governor Huckabee and Governor Romney. And so I don't think there's daylight there."

A Vietnam veteran, Hunter, 59, grew up on a ranch outside Riverside, Calif., and dropped out of college to serve in the Army.
He was awarded the Bronze Star for conducting 24 helicopter assaults.

He farmed and then practiced law until he ran for the House. In redistricting, he was given a more reliably Republican district, where he has been re-elected by wide margins.

Hunter is retiring from Congress this year.
His son, a former Marine who served in Iraq (and Afghanistan), is running for his seat.

DECISION-MAKING STYLE

Hunter is not afraid to confront the brass or stick up for soldiers.

In a recent television appearance, he told how his son had called him on a satellite cell phone while in the middle of battle in Fallujah, Iraq, "with some unsavory words for all politicians in general."

Hunter said his son told him that U.S. forces had been sweeping through the city, but were ordered to stop. Hunter said he hung up and immediately called the Pentagon, which told him that further fighting would "tear the Sunni community apart."

"So they stopped," Hunter said. "But that was a great example, I think, of the United States making a political decision."

He issued strong criticism of President Bush when Bush failed to issue pardons for two U.S. Border Patrol agents sentenced to prison for shooting a Mexican drug smuggler.

Hunter says the challenges facing the nation require a leader who has traditional values as well as a commitment to protecting freedom and expanding it around the world.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

He has argued that he's tough enough to stand up to China and demand better trade deals.
He also points to his advocacy for the U.S.-Mexico border fence, which he said has reduced the smuggling of people and narcotics in part of San Diego by 90 percent.

In his tenure as Armed Services Committee chairman, he set up a new subcommittee on emerging threats. Hunter also was a strong advocate for veterans and refused to hold hearings on the abuses reported at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Hunter has targeted conservatives who want to continue to mount a strong defense for the United States, toughen border security and gain better footing on trade.

In GOP debates and public appearances, he has zeroed in on those topics.

"Americans start a football game with a clean scoreboard. But China starts a game against our businesses with a 74-point advantage," Hunter said about trade, arguing for a more level playing field that would aid American workers.

Hunter says he's the only real conservative in the GOP presidential field, with his "major selling point" being his position on trade and opposition to illegal immigration.

"I built the border fence in San Diego and I wrote the law that extends it across the southwest United States," he said. "And I think that resonates with the American people."

In November, Hunter sent a letter to the chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America complaining about a movie called "Redacted," which he said "portrays American service personnel in Iraq as uncontrollable misfits and criminals."

POLICY VISION

Hunter isn't a one-issue candidate. He's focused on three issues, he says.

Tougher border control, stronger national defense and a more equitable trade policy sum up his message in his quest for the White House, Hunter says.

"You know, if you have got the issues, you don't have to spend as much money on image consultants and folks that are shaping a message," he said.

"I know what my message is.
So what I have to do is reach out and get the message to people."

Duncan Hunter

Regular readers of my column know that I have enthusiastically supported Tom Tancredo for president.

In fact, two years ago, I personally asked Tancredo to run for president because I feared there would be no Republican candidate offering real solutions to America's crisis with illegal immigration and border security.

Tancredo answered the call. I always knew he was, at best, a reluctant and long-shot candidate. But he answered the bell.

Last week, Tancredo withdrew from the race and endorsed Mitt Romney for the presidency.

This was a huge mistake by Tancredo. I'm sure he had his reasons. He said he wanted to find a top-tier candidate who was strongest on his pet issue. But, this is the primary season. In the primary season, Americans should pay little attention to the polls and select the very best candidate possible. Actual votes decide who is selected as the party nominees – not polls.

That's why I supported Tancredo in the first place. I didn't pay attention to the polls. I selected the man I thought would be the best candidate. I liked Tancredo so much, I published his terrific book, "In Mortal Danger," still one of the very best indictments of America's disastrous border and immigration policies.

I will certainly not follow Tancredo's lead in supporting Romney. Romney is a pretender to the throne. He launched his campaign for the Republican nomination by running contrary to virtually every major position and action he has previously taken in public life.

In other words, nothing he says today has any credibility. He cannot be believed.

Furthermore, Romney's stated position today on illegal aliens is essentially a pro-amnesty stance.

He says, for instance, he would allow illegal aliens to apply for permanent residency in the U.S. after they go home for an undisclosed period of time. This sounds remarkably like the amnesty positions offered up in the debates earlier this year.

It's unacceptable – and Tom Tancredo, of all people, should recognize that.

Therefore, today I make a new, personal endorsement for the Republican nomination – Duncan Hunter.

I do so with no hesitancy. I do so with great enthusiasm.

In fact, I have previously made it clear just how much admiration and respect I have for Hunter.

He's my guy because on all the major issues facing this country, Hunter is right. And he is a proven leader who gets the job done.

Illegal immigration and border security: Duncan Hunter takes a backseat to no one on this issue – not even Tom Tancredo. He took the initiative long ago to protect the citizens of his own San Diego area by building a virtually impenetrable fence that has cut down human trafficking in the area by nearly 100 percent.

Threat of Islamo-fascism: Hunter recognizes the gravity of the war in which America finds itself, whether we like it or not. Hunter has a strong military background and would make an effective leader in a conflict that will not go away unless we destroy the enemy.

Our cultural meltdown: Hunter rejects the madness of political correctness and multiculturalism that is ripping America apart at the seams. He is a man of God who will stand for what is morally right no matter the consequences.

The economy: Duncan Hunter will fight the mindless globalization that is destroying jobs in America and transferring them abroad – bringing in return cheap goods that are often unsafe and little more than junk. He will also cut taxes and revamp the unfair and highly intrusive tax system – both of which will stimulate the American economy.

Matters of life and death: Hunter is steadfastly and consistently pro-life – at both ends of the life spectrum.
There is much more to say about his excellent record and his fearless championing of all that is good and decent about America.

The point is this:
We don't have to settle for less.
We don't have to settle for an imitation of the real thing.
We don't have to settle for someone who is right most of the time.

Duncan Hunter is the real deal.

Support him now – so we don't have to compromise later.

The "real deal", hmmm I like the sound of that, where have I heard Hunter called that before?

New Poll Shows 'Undecided' Could Win It All

From a new poll published by the Tulsa World, you have probably already heard that Mike Huckabee is leading in Oklahoma with 29% of Republicans supporting him. What you haven't heard is that second place goes to "undecided" with 22%.

So I am talking to the 22% of Republicans who are "undecided" at this point for whom they will cast their vote in the primary.

I'm gonna give you the benefit of doubt and believe you are just too busy and fed up to care and it's not out of laziness or stupidity.

This may very well turn out to be the most important election in decades considering what is at stake so I'm going to help you out here. As Ronald Reagan himself once said... "trust but verify."

Take 10 minutes out of your busy life and do something good for our country. Compare your current choices to Duncan Hunter issue by issue. I have posted Hunter's positions here on most every issue, or ontheissues.org has them all for you to review and compare voting records not campaign rhetoric.

Duncan Hunter best represents Oklahoma values and ideals.
I'm not going to list them again here now, that is for you to find and discover for yourself... it's better that way, considering that you will believe what you say.

The Daily Kos is claiming that all Oklahoma democrats have to do is select John Edwards and they are virtually guaranteed to win the white house next November based on this same poll.

So when you go to the polls to vote for our Republican candidate on Super Tuesday, remember this.
You can compromise your values and go with one of the fake conservative well known popular favorites or go with your gut and what is right. It's your choice Oklahoma, do you have the guts to make the choice or will you cave in to the pretenders?

Savage: General Petraeus Didn't Betray Us

I generally have a hard time listening to Michael Savage for more than a few minutes. He absolutely hates liberals, socialists and communists and he is so angry at Republicans for not fighting for conservative ideals that he ends up just sounding like he hates everybody.

He doesn't quite hate everybody I learned.
He certainly doesn't hate our military and he doesn't hate one of the Presidential candidates. Below is a Michael Savage interview that I find refreshing, honest and to the point even though I don't especially consider myself a big Savage fan. So don't bother telling me all the things you think Savage is wrong about... here is one thing he has gotten 100% right.

Back in September of this year (just 3 months ago) the left and the democrat party launched an attack on our military and General David Petraeus in hopes to bring about the defeat of the US armed forces fighting in Iraq for the purpose of pure politics.
They called him a liar, said he was manufacturing false evidence and claimed the war was lost while General Petraeus remained strong and committed to his report that has now been verified as 100% accurate. The surge did work, violence is amazingly low and AQI is almost completely defeated.
Who stood up for General Petraeus during those hearings?

Ann Coulter On Fake Conservative Mike Huckabee

Mike Huckabee seems to be leading the polls here in Oklahoma and yet he is NOT the real deal. Oklahomans need to look deeper into this candidate than just him being a neighbor and a Christian. Ask yourselves just WHY LIBERALS LOVE Mike Huckabee so much if he is all that conservative?

This piece by Ann Coulter lays it out perfectly...

LIBERALS SING 'HUCKELUJAH'

Wed Dec 26, 6:50 PM ET

All I want for Christmas is for Christians to listen to what Mike Huckabee says, rather than what the media say about him. The mainstream media keep flogging Huckabee for being a Christian, apparently unaware that this "God" fellow is testing through the roof in focus groups.

Huckabee is a "compassionate conservative" only in the sense that calling him a conservative is being compassionate.

He responded to my column last week -- pointing out that he is on record supporting the Supreme Court's sodomy-is-a-constitutional-right decision -- by saying that he was relying on the word of a caller to his radio show and didn't know the details of the case. Ironically, that's how most people feel about sodomy: They support it until they hear the details.

First, I'd pay a lot of money to hear how a court opinion finding that sodomy is a constitutional right could be made to sound reasonable. But the caller had the right response when Huckabee asked him, "What's your favorite radio station?" So he seemed like a reliable source.

Second, Huckabee's statement that he agreed with the court's sodomy ruling was made one week after the decision. According to Nexis, in that one week, the sodomy decision had been the cover story on every newspaper in the country, including The New York Times. It was the talk of all the Sunday news programs. It had been denounced by every conservative and Christian group in America -- as well as other random groups of sane individuals having no conservative inclinations whatsoever.

The highest court in the land had found sodomy was a constitutional right! That sort of thing tends to make news. (I was going to say the sodomy ruling got publicity up the wazoo, but this is, after all, Christmas week.)

So this little stretch-marked cornpone is either lying, has a closed head injury, is a complete ignoramus -- or all of the above.

Huckabee opposes school choice, earning him the coveted endorsement of the National Education Association of New Hampshire, which is like the sheriff being endorsed by the local whorehouse.

He is, however, in favor of school choice for kids in Mexico: They have the choice of going to school there or here. Huckabee promoted giving in-state tuition in Arkansas to illegal immigrants from Mexico -- but not to U.S. citizens from Ohio. "I don't believe you punish the children," he said, "for the crime and sins of the parents."

Since when is not offering someone lavish taxpayer-funded benefits a form of punishment? That's almost as crazy as a governor pardoning a known sex offender so he can go out and rape and kill.

Huckabee claims he's against punishing children for the crimes of their fathers in the case of illegal immigrants. But in the case of slavery, he believes the children of the children's children should be routinely punished for the crimes of their fathers. Huckabee has said illegal immigration gives Americans a chance to make up for slavery. (I thought letting O.J. walk for murdering two people was payback for slavery.)

Just two years ago, Huckabee cheerfully announced to a meeting of the Hispanic advocacy group League of United Latin American Citizens that "Pretty soon, Southern white guys like me may be in the minority." Who's writing this guy's speeches -- Al Sharpton? (Actually, take out "Southern" and "white," and I agree with Huckabee's sentiment).

He said the transition from Arkansas' Southern traditions would "require extraordinary efforts on both sides of the border." But, curiously, most of the efforts Huckabee described would come entirely from this side of the border. Arkansas, he pledged, would celebrate diversity "in culture, in language and in population." He said America would have to "accommodate" those who come here.

All that he expected from those south of the border was that they have a desire to provide better opportunities for their families. Basically, we have to keep accommodating everyone but U.S. citizens.

For those of you keeping score at home, this puts Huckabee just a little to the left of Dennis Kucinich on illegal immigration and border control. The only difference is that Kucinich supports amnesty for aliens from south of the border and north of Saturn.

In a widely quoted remark, Huckabee denounced a Republican bill that would merely require proof of citizenship to vote and receive government benefits as "un-Christian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life," according to the Arkansas News Bureau. Now, where have I heard this sort of thing before? Hmmm ... wait, now I remember: It was during the Democratic debates!

In his current attempt to pretend to be against illegal immigration, Huckabee makes a meaningless joke about how the federal government should track illegals the way Federal Express tracks packages. (Can a Mexican fit in one of those little envelopes?)

In other words, Huckabee is going to address the problem of illegal immigration by making jokes. It's called leadership, folks.

Huckabee confirms for liberal TV hosts their image of conservatives as dorks by bragging about how cool he is because he "likes music." What's he doing -- running for president or filling out his Facebook profile? Arkansas former fatty loves to make jokes and play the bass guitar. Remember what happened to the last former fatboy from Arkansas trying to be "cool" by liking music? I'll take "Stained Dresses" for $400, Alex.

According to Huckabee, most people think conservatives don't like music. Who on earth says conservatives don't like music -- other than liberals and Mike Huckabee? This desperate need to be liked by liberals has never led to anything but calamity.

Huckabee wants to get kids involved in music at an early age because he believes it leads to a more balanced and developed brain. You know, as we saw with the Jackson family. Maybe someone should tell him the Osmonds are voting for Romney.

He supports a nationwide smoking ban anyplace where people work, constitutional protection for sodomy, big government, higher taxes and government benefits for illegal aliens. According to my calculations, that puts him about three earmarks away from being Nancy Pelosi.

Liberals take a perverse pleasure in touting Huckabee because they know he will give them everything they want -- big government and a Christian they can roll.

Terry Anderson Endorses Duncan Hunter

Thanks to Grassrevolt from the towncriernews.blogspot.com

There has been no one more steady and true on the illegal immigration issue than Radio’s own Terry Anderson in Los Angeles.

Last night on his program he stated in his unmistakable fashion,
“DUNCAN HUNTER IS MY
FIRST GUY!” and “The only one I would consider is Duncan Hunter!”

To candidates Romney and Huckabee, Terry had this thought about their ‘registration’ or ‘touch back’ schemes for illegal aliens. “Register them as they’re leaving the country so we know who to NEVER let back in!” and “Anything short of deportation is amnesty”

From the show, Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007 Does “Peace on earth, good will toward men” mean amnesty?

The Most Horriblest Clown of the Week… “Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney Double-talking moron wants invaders cut slack, be allowed to squat here.”

A Ron Paul supporter called Terry, admonishing him for not endorsing Paul. NO one knows this subject better than Terry. “Gary”, proclaimed Paul has done more to fight illegal immigration than anyone!!!!
Terry reminded him of the THREE amnesties Paul voted for to grant visa overstaying aliens ‘legalization’.
Terry didn’t get the chance to inform the caller that Hunter was legislating to correct the problem a decade before Paul ever thought of it or that Paul has never gotten one piece of his legislation into law and only this year addressed anything to deal with it.

Terry knows this subject unlike anyone else. He’s been all over the country fighting for us for the past 2 decades including testifying before congress. He took on the reconquista crowd in Los Angeles before the rest of knew it existed.

Terry knows we can’t afford to elect yet another flip flopping open border advocate. Be informed with your vote! As Anderson says, “If You Ain’t Mad, You Ain’t Payin’ Attention!”

Archives of the show will be posted on Terry’s website.

Iraqis Crowd Churches For Christmas

FREEDOM RINGS...
Thousands attended Christmas services across Iraq today, many for the first time... certainly since the war started. The next time one of your smart-mouthed liberal friends mentions the war (most of them are afraid to nowadays), point them to this article (link below). The US is now being seen as liberators not occupiers and the Iraqis are experiencing the freedom that America has given them.
Merry Christmas to all Iraqis, Merry Christmas to all our troops.
God Bless you all.
Iraqis Crowd Churches for Christmas

In other news, General David Petraeus says violence is down 60% overall in Iraq, a trend he intends to continue to develop through 2008.
What say you now, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and the rest?
Do you claim he still a liar or were you the liars just 2 short months ago... when you proclaimed the war is lost, the surge can't work and Petraeus couldn't be trusted.
Just curious...

Pre-Primary Must Read For Republicans

Hat tip to Grassrevolt for Part One of this piece from News Which Cannot Lose blog.

Part 1- Vision vs Pandering

Make this part of your pre-caucus or primary reading

Alexander J. Madison - December 23, 2007

I had a recent opportunity to have some holiday cheer and briefly talk politics with two longtime conservative associates; one a Mike Huckabee leaner and the other a Fred Thompson guy. The arguments (paraphrasing) went like this:

Huckabee guy: Huck is the one who can truly re-energize the Christian Conservatives in the party, he has a good sense of humor, presents himself well and his personality surely will attract moderates, not scare them off. His recent ‘surge’ is evidence of a winning political ear, which we will need to beat Hillary. He also was a successful governor from a Southern state, and despite a few missteps that all politicians have, he has a solid, conservative platform, just check out his website. Besides, Hunter does not have traction.

Thompson guy: Fred is the guy to beat Rudy McRomney. His record on fiscal issues and government reform and federalism is impressive and no one ever considered him a liberal, like some of these other schmucks. And his endorsement by the National Right to Life organization last month over Huck and Hunter shows that he is fully capable of carrying the values voters. And his recent position papers on social security and Illegal immigration are the type of clearheaded thinking the country needs in a President.

Me: Just look at their records in totality. Hunter is strongest and most consistent on borders, military affairs, foreign policy, sovereignty, tax cuts, anti-communism, all the most important things we need in a commander in chief right now. Hunter’s warnings about China and porous borders and losses of industrial might have all come home to roost, and most of the other candidates have been far less than helpful in these areas throughout their careers.

Three reasonable arguments for three Republicans in good standing? So it would seem.

But there is a significant difference that my friends both grudgingly admitted to: Hunter has been the most consistent of the three throughout their careers. However, both stressed the ‘here and now’, using Huckabee’s recent “strong” position on enforcing our borders and Fred’s willingness to tackle entitlements, respectively, as more proof of their candidate’s veracity and viability.

But if we are to give great weight to what a politician says during the course of a campaign for the GOP nomination, then one could argue that Rudy and McCain and Romney also deserve accolades and support for their candidacies. And indeed, they do have a fair amount of support and accolades at this time. If you read the position papers and policy statements and see the debate answers from each of these men, it is possible to coherently argue for any one of them being the superior man for President.

Though both of my friends were more than happy to rake Rudy and Romney and McCain over the coals for their past ‘sins’ against conservatism, they were able to minimize and basically ignore the less savory aspects of their chosen man’s record with ease. I do not argue that all transgressions against conservatism are equal, they are not. But giving undue weight to the rhetoric of a candidate’s stump speech or policies posted on a campaign website is an exercise in rationalization, not prudent evaluation.

So how do we separate them as they all dash for the title of ‘strong conservative leader’? The answer: Vision.

Vision is what separates a man like Ronald Reagan from a man like his Vice President, George Herbert Walker Bush. Vision provides the ability to see what lies over the horizon, the courage to confront it before it spins into chaos, and the wisdom to apply conservative solutions, regardless of how tantalizing or expedient a more liberal remedy may be. Vision also entails the ability to clearly recognize history for what it truly is, including the underlying wisdom our founders espoused, and including the knowledge of man’s nature. Vision is what separates those whose values are anchored like roots of a 200 year old oak tree from those who use a moistened finger to assess the political winds.

Vision is what sets Duncan Hunter apart from ALL of the others. That vision is reflected in his consistency, his record, his press statements, his long held beliefs and his current platform. No other candidate, other than Ron Paul (who espouses an odd hybrid of libertarianism and leftism), comes close to the having a rock solid vision that has animated his entire life and public service. The winds of change may have devastated large swaths of the Republican Party in recent years, but they just caused Hunter to dig in deeper and to fight even harder. While others pander to the current circumstances of a Republican primary and to subgroups within the GOP, Hunter is as he was; an America-first, conservative patriot with the unflinching vision of what our country stands for.

On Communist China & Trade

Fred Thompson, despite tough rhetoric today, has been all over the map on China. In 1997 he voted to revoke China’s Most Favored Nation (MFN) trade status (S.Amdt. 890 to S. 955), then turned around in 1999 – after even more Chinese malfeasance was uncovered, some by Mr. Thompson himself – and voted in favor of MFN (S.J.Res. 27). Then, during the 2000 debate to give Bill Clinton his coveted Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) for the chicoms, Fred teamed with Robert Toricelli to put in a poison pill amendment (S.Amdt 4132 to HR 4444), tying trade to a series of weapons non proliferation standards. Despite the Jesse Helms-like posture and the subsequent failure of his amendment, Fred ended up voting for PNTR, amendment free, handing Clinton a huge victory at the expense of our national security.

In the October 9 debate in Michigan, Fred half-heartedly used the ‘Free-trade’ card when Hunter confronted all 3 Senators present for voting in favor of PNTR. You could tell he was not particularly comfortable debating Hunter on the subject, because he knew Hunter was right; Michigan has been hemorrhaging manufacturing jobs badly to China, and the media headlines had been filled all year with tales of additional Chinese perfidy. The tales have only gotten worse - and more serious - since October. And all the candidates, including Fred, have been adjusting their stump speeches accordingly.

Fred Thompson, along with Arlen Specter and the democrats on the Senate Panel, also took what should have been a deadly serious investigation into Chinese money and influence in the 1996 election and expanded it to be an overarching campaign finance investigation that even targeted groups such as Americans for Tax Reform and the Christian Coalition!! All to conservatives’ utter disbelief and chagrin.

Mike Huckabee has recently begun aping some of Hunter’s rhetoric on China, particularly when it comes to the staggering trade deficit. This past September, Huck wrote: “Our government has failed us by allowing the Chinese to buy up extraordinary amounts of our currency, and then manipulate that currency to artificially lower their prices and to force things back into the country. This has created an incredible trade deficit that last year alone was over $232 billion”.

Yet, he never even whispered a hint of criticism about our ill-conceived relationship with China during his 10-1/2 years in office. In fact, Huckabee was PNTR’s biggest gubernatorial cheerleader, telling World Net Daily in May 2000: “I’ve long believed the best way to defeat communism is to introduce a free-market system. Once people become used to the free market, they will refuse to return to the old way of doing things. Such an occurrence in China would be good news for every American since it has more than a fourth of the world’s population.”

In 2000, Huckabee helped craft, and signed, the letter from the governors to Congress begging them to pass PNTR. He also naively told Time Magazine just last April, “The good news is that China is becoming much more a part of the mainstream. In its economic development and even in giving greater liberties to its people…I am not as worried about China, though we have to be concerned about any nation that has the military and economic power that it does. I think we need to be more concerned from a standpoint of anxiety from nations led by radical and outspoken tyrants who openly issue threats to the United States and its people”.

So it is glaringly obvious that the recent ‘get tough’ gum flapping is just another case of a Road to Des Moines conversion; one of many for Mr. Huckabee.

John McCain, for all of his supposed expertise in foreign affairs, was an even bigger cheerleader for phony ‘free trade’ with the communists, not only for China, but for Vietnam as well. In fact, McCain argued in 1990 that normalizing trade and relations with Vietnam (despite unaccounted for POWs) would act as a “counterweight” to Chinese aggression in the region; yet he quickly tossed that out the window to become one of China’s biggest proponents in the US Senate. He was so enthusiastic for “engagement” with China in the 2000 presidential debates that it prompted candidate Gary Bauer, a former Reagan official, to tell him he had a “naiveté about Chinese leaders that is breathtaking.” Truer words have seldom been spoken. And his naiveté about China is only matched by his ignorance about conservatism.

Now, as McCain runs again for the presidency in 2007, he offered up this milquetoast comment to Chris Matthews: China needs to act like a super-power and take on global responsibilities. Some of us are disappointed in its lack of maturity.” That ought to really rattle the tough old communist vultures in the PLA.

Contrast these gentlemen’s unanchored swerves with Duncan Hunter. Hunter has had the vision from the outset that communist China was, is, and will be for the foreseeable future, an adversary, not a “strategic partner”. Hunter does not trust China for one very, very simple reason: History has taught him that communists cannot be trusted. Most real conservatives understand this axiom. Hunter understands that an agreement with China is not worth the paper it is written on.

According to the Seattle PI in 1986: Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., strongly opposes any efforts to relax present export controls because he believes U.S. companies would gain far less than the government would be forced to spend to beef up security in the event of a strategic leak. ”It’s like the propeller milling equipment,” explained John Palafoutas, a Hunter aide. ”Once they apply it overseas, we have to upgrade security and defense spending. The businesses may make $60 million more, but it costs us $30 billion in defense costs.”

And later, when it came to lifting export controls on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) technology to China, Hunter added, “My philosophy is that we should err on the side of caution in these cases. I would oppose any move to sell even dual-use technologies in the ASW area.”

Hunter led the charge to revoke MFN for China in 1992, and each year since. In 1996, as the republicans folded one by one to the China lobby, Hunter wrote this for Knight Ridder News:

“Advocates of continued Most-Favored-Nation trade status for China claim that this is a ”normal” part of U.S. international relations and that China hasn’t done anything odd enough to be an exception.

China’s friends seem to have adopted a rather jaded view of normality. Are thinly veiled threats to attack Los Angeles, like those made by China during the recent Taiwan crisis, ‘normal’ diplomatic discourse? Was Beijing’s attempt to influence elections on Taiwan by military demonstrations and missile firings ”normal? Was the movement of two U.S. carrier battlegroups to positions of potential confrontation with China a ”normal” gesture of friendly relations? Or, do these actions indicate a strategic relationship with China more on a par with Cuba or North Korea, countries with which we do not extend MFN?

“We didn’t grant MFN to the Soviet Union either, when it was aiming missiles at U.S. cities……Renewing China’s MFN status without a strategic quid pro quo would be another sign of relative American weakness.”

In 2001, while the Bush administration, Colin Powell and the State Department tip-toed gingerly during the hostage standoff involving China and our downed Air Force servicemen, Hunter immediately offered up new legislation to kill PNTR. Hunter has always been eager to put his knee on China’s neck. Only Hunter has been illuminating the new weapons systems and technology that the Chinese have purchased, stolen and developed, as a cogent argument for not tolerating the lopsided trade deal that enriches the communist nation, saying “as we trade, China prepares for war”. As the DC publication The Hill headlined in 2006 – ‘Leadership knows Rep. Duncan Hunter’s Arm doesn’t Twist’ – each President from Reagan to GW Bush has had to learn that same lesson the hard way.

Time after time after time, the Chicoms are caught red-handed in some nefarious activity - putting toxic fillers in pet food, exporting fish raised in rancid pens, cyber-attacking the Pentagon or NSA, and pirating intellectual property - yet Hunter is one of the very few people with the balls in DC willing (and itching, actually) to confront them. The same cannot be said for ANY of his opponents.

And as Mitt Romney is learning, Hunter will not tolerate a blank stare for an answer when it comes to protecting US technology from Chinese clutches.

On Tax Cuts

One can choose to ignore the horrendous grades given to Mike Huckabee by the Club for Growth, the National Taxpayer’s Union and the CATO Institute. Across the board, they rated Huckabee as a far more proficient tax raiser than tax cutter. Huckabee earned an F, yes an F, from CATO at one point. But, just as Huck has attempted, one can argue that they are looking at his record too narrowly. But what one cannot do is ignore Huckabee’s own statements. From a May 2003 Arkansas Assembly speech (captured on Youtube):

“Again, let me state what I’ve said privately, as well as publicly, I want to get it on the record again. There is a lot of support for a tax at the wholesale level for tobacco, and that’s fine with me. I’d very happily sign that, because it is a revenue stream that will meet the needs if enacted at a level that will help us meet that 90 to 100 million dollar target. That’s what I want to begin focusing your attention on…is the target. Some have suggested a retail level of tobacco and if that ends up being your preference, I will accept that. Some have suggested a surcharge on the income tax, that’s acceptable. I’m fine with that. Others have suggested, perhaps a sales tax. That’s fine. Yet others have suggested a hybrid that would accept some monies from any one or a combination of those various ideas. And if that’s the plan that the House and Senate agree upon, then you will have nothing but my profound thanks”.

Then, top it off with blatant dishonesty regarding his record, such as his repeated claim that the taxes in question- which he literally begged for - were mandated by the US Supreme Court. That is 100% false, like so many other claims Mr. Huckabee has made.

Mitt Romney was somewhat better during his reign in the Massachusetts governor’s chair. Mitt often touts the notion that he closed a multi-billion dollar budget deficit “without raising taxes”. But as the CATO Institute and others have pointed out, Mr. Romney is pulling a Schwarzenegger, by not classifying hikes in fees as tax increases. According to the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald, Romney raised fees by 400 million, yes - 400 million, and closed “loopholes” for another 300 million in revenue. Of course, Mitt also reminds us that he is the only top tier 2008 candidate to sign Grover Norquist’s “no new taxes” pledge. Yet just a few short years ago he refused to sign it for his run for governor, saying, “I’m against tax increases. But I’m not intending to, at this stage, sign a document which would prevent me from being able to look specifically at the revenue needs of the Commonwealth.”

Mitt’s history on taxes gets worse. He chose not to endorse the Bush tax cuts when they were being debated in 2001 and 2003. And according to the Washington Times, Mitt strongly opposed the 1994 Contract with America’s call for a capital gains tax cut. Mitt also ran ads against Steve Forbes’ flat tax proposal calling it a “tax cut for fat cats”. Regardless of one’s opinion on the particulars of a flat tax, Mitt’s statement smacks of democrat class warfare, unfit for any republican. It may also help explain why he oddly blurted out that he does not “stay awake at night worrying about the taxes that rich people are paying” at the last Iowa debate. But conservatives sure would lose a lot of sleep worrying which Mitt would show up in the Oval Office.

Rudy Giuliani’s record on taxes is equally unimpressive. Though he did cut a number of taxes (he claims 23) and certainly improved the conditions in NYC, Rudy was vehemently opposed to Republican Governor Pataki’s call for a reduction in the state income tax. That opposition is inexplicable, unless one realizes that Rudy also vehemently opposed the City’s elimination of the 12.5% city surcharge on income. Rudy lost that battle, but now takes credit, as is his habit. So while Rudy’s record on taxes was mixed, at best, he now is trying to paint himself as Reagan reincarnated.

Here is what the National Review had to say in a September 2007 article entitled Rudy’s Taxing Problem: Rudy Giuliani’s recent attempt to portray himself as Reaganite tax-cutter just doesn’t square with the hard facts about his record opposing broad-based tax relief. The mayor honestly admits that he is more liberal than many Republicans on social issues, but has yet to admit that his economic record is similarly out of sync.

As far as John McCain and taxes go, not much needs to be said. From the WSJ in March 2007: Sen. McCain was one of only two Republican senators to oppose the 2001 tax cuts and one of only three GOP senators to oppose the 2003 reductions. Furthermore, his reason for opposing the cuts was taken straight from the playbook of the most radical left-wing Democrats. In 2001, Sen. McCain argued, “I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us at the expense of middle-class Americans who need tax relief.” McCain proves his untrustworthiness and innate liberalism in a single sentence. Enough!

Meanwhile, Duncan Hunter has a nearly perfect record on taxes. He voted for tax cuts as a House member and voted against tax increases as a House member. Hunter’s vision mirrors that of Ronald Reagan when it comes to taxes: Lower taxes stimulate growth and ultimately generates more money into the treasury because of it. However, Hunter was not content to just vote on whatever tax proposals appeared in the House, he aggressively pushed for them, sponsoring and cosponsoring numerous bills and amendments dealing with taxation. In his first two years in Congress, Hunter put his sponsorship to about a dozen bills to amend the tax code to lower taxes, including a bill to kill the ‘marriage penalty’ (HR 1700). Subsequently, Hunter has sponsored tax relief for family businesses, fringe benefits, tip income, work done abroad, capital gains, research and development, health care savings accounts, oil and gas, farmers and farm equipment, capital equipment depreciation and much more. He sponsored bills to kill the ‘windfall profits’ tax and the death tax. He also cosponsored a 10% individual flat tax in the late 1980s.

Hunter vigorously supported Reagan’s historic 1981 tax cut package, and vigorously opposed George Herbert Walker Bush’s fateful 1991 tax increase. He also opposed President Clinton’s tax increases while cosponsoring GW Bush’s historic tax cuts in 2001 and 2003.

And over the last couple of years, Hunter has sponsored or cosponsored major, permanent tax relief in HR 411, the Fair Tax, deductions for education expenses, a permanent ban on the internet tax, elimination of the alternative minimum tax and the estate tax, repeal of the telecommunications excise tax, a reduction of the non-corporate tax rate, and the bill to make the Bush tax cuts permanent.

Simply stated, Hunter has been as consistent an advocate for tax relief as he has been for the life of the unborn. And that is saying something. He penned the following in early 2007, but it could just have easily been penned by Mr. Hunter in 1981:

“An over-taxing government is the biggest contributor to creating poverty. By continuing to inhibit the economic growth and potential of our citizens, we prevent the investment capability to create jobs, increase income and provide a stable financial environment. I believe all citizens are “deserving of tax relief and tax-cutting policies benefit the American economy as a whole.

I do not support efforts to identify segments of our society that are more deserving of a tax cut over another and I believe political stereotyping in this area hinders the goal of providing efficient tax relief.”

Beautifully said!

On Bureaucracy and the Nanny State

Rudy Giuliani loves to tout his anti-bureaucracy bona-fides as he stumps around the country seeking support for his presidential bid. He did indeed strong arm some departments into performance and slashed the welfare roles (as they were also cut nation wide) as Mayor. However, upon closer examination, it is apparent that he is a nanny-state advocate along the lines of his successor, Mayor Bloomberg. Banning smoking in restaurants and bars? Check. Providing day care for government employees? Check. Opening up tax payer funded clinics for the gay and lesbian community? Check. Welfare for illegal aliens? Check. Unconstitutional search and seizures of guns and automobiles? Check. Lawsuits to put the gun manufacturers out of business? Check. A government budget in his second term that grew by a whopping 25%, leaving office with a huge projected deficit? Check.

Then, of course, who can forget these classic Rudy hits: “There must be public funding for abortions for poor women” and ‘Mayor Giuliani Introduces Legislation Banning Cell Phone Use While Driving’ and ‘NYC Sues Tobacco Companies’. But perhaps the double platinum best seller is this quote from 1996 as he contemplated endorsing Slick Willy: “Most of Clinton’s policies are very similar to mine.”

In this arena, Rudy has stiff competition from Mike Huckabee. As governor, the Huck demanded that fatty sweets be banned from the schools. He signed onto a ban on public smoking (and wants to expand that nationally - egads). He pushed for scholarships and in state tuition for illegal aliens. He raised the minimum wage in Arkansas. And according to the Club for Growth, he presided over a 67% increase in state spending from 1996 to 2004, several times the rate of inflation. The stark reality is that you need to spend more when you want to give “free” college tuition to highschoolers who maintain good grades, administer body fat tests to school kids, and conjure up a socialized medicine program called ARKids. But I’ll let liberal Time magazine, who selected Huckabee as one of the ‘Top 5’ governors in 2005 describe his metamorphosis from conservative to well….liberal:

More important, but less noted, has been Huckabee’s political transformation. In his early years as Lieutenant Governor and then in the top job, he offered little more than anti-Clinton resentment and capering populism; in 1996 he warned of “environmental wackos who … want to tell us what kind of deodorant we can use.” Huckabee is now a mature, consensus-building conservative who earns praise from fellow Evangelicals and, occasionally, liberal Democrats. (my ed. - notably absent, praise from conservative, who despised him)

In 1997 he surprised some Republicans by introducing ARKids First, and a year later he decided that all the state’s proceeds from the tobacco industry lawsuit settlement should go to health education, antismoking campaigns and—get this—Medicaid expansion.

Fred Thompson, on the other hand, has a reputation as a hard nosed federalist and government shrinker. However, the reality is a bit less flattering. In 1996, Fred was tasked with re-writing the federal Juvenile Justice laws. He coughed up an albatross called the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1996. Among its finer provisions was this gem:

(a) IN GENERAL- In order to be eligible to receive formula grants under this part, each State shall–

(1) ensure that not less than 75 percent of the funds made available to the State under section 222, whether expended directly by the State, by the unit of general local government, or by a combination thereof, or through grants and contracts with public or private nonprofit agencies, shall be used–

(A) for prevention and nonincarcerative intervention, including drug and alcohol treatment activities, and programs that encourage courts to develop and implement a continuum of post-adjudication restraints that bridge the gap between probation and confinement in a correctional facility, including graduated sanctions for youth offenders;

The entire thing is a liberal mess and a further usurpation of state power to deal with juvenile crime. Fortunately, Orrin Hatch recognized this, and strangled the tar baby in committee.

Though failing in his attempt to further bureaucratize juvenile crime, he did succeed in 2002 - in collaboration with Jeff Bingaman, Olympia Snowe and John Kerry - on a massive global warming bill. Called TITLE X—NATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE POLICY, Senate Amendment SA 3232, it is page after page of bureaucratic PC-speak aimed at posturing the United States for an international treaty on global warming. It is truly one of the most unfettered fluster-kuck pieces of legislation to come down the pike in years. It reaches into dozens of federal agencies requiring them to comply with new regulations, creates a new ‘Office of National Climate Change Policy’, and appropriates billions of taxpayer dollars in pursuit of a hoax. Item 10, under the ‘findings’ section tells us all we need to know about this beast:

(10) Senate Resolution 98 of the 105th Congress, which expressed that developing nations must also be included in any future, binding climate change treaty and such a treaty must not result in serious harm to the United States economy, should not cause the United States to abandon its shared responsibility to help reduce the risks of climate change and its impacts. Future international efforts in this regard should focus on recognizing the equitable responsibilities for addressing climate change by all nations, including commitments by the largest developing country emitters in a future, binding climate change treaty.

I’ll leave Fred’s involvement in the equally egregious attack on the 1st amendment called McCain-Feingold-Thompson alone for now. Suffice to say that it too was an exercise in unconstitutional nanny-statism that, mercifully, the courts are starting to toss in the crapper.

Mitt Romney, on the other hand, never got the chance to vote for McCain-Feingold-Thompson, being a Governor and all, but he was quite the cheerleader for it. When McCain campaigned for Mitt in his 2002 race the Concord Monitor reported:

“Romney also praised McCain for his general reform campaign when the Arizona senator came to Massachusetts to stump with Romney just before Romney’s 2002 election victory in the governor’s race. ‘He has always stood for reform and change. And he’s always fought the good battle, no matter what the odds,’ Romney said at the time. ‘Those are my values.’”

Of course, these days, Romney decries McCain-Feingold-Thompson as unconstitutional. Just another in a long line of blatant – and frankly hilarious – flip flops.

Mitts views on stifling free speech in campaigns were just the tip of the iceberg in his pursuit of a Massachusetts nanny-state. Mitt signed an ‘assault weapons’ ban, despite not knowing an assault rifle from a turnip: And this position is one of the few things he has NOT flipped flopped on. He presided over a group called the ‘Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth’ which instituted the most radical gay indoctrination in any school system outside of San Francisco. The chairman of the group, Kathleen Henry, was tickled with Romney’s funding for them. According to the Boston Globe in July 2005, she defended the budget saying: ”The fact that he doubled last year’s [proposed budget allocation] this year is huge to us. It’s really huge. It says to us clearly that he gets the service for what it really is.”

Of course, the coup de grâce to any notion that Mitt was a conservative is his mandatory healthcare insurance plan, un-affectionately known as RomneyCare. His was the first plan in the nation that mandated health insurance. It is an expensive, unworkable and unconstitutional intrusion into the affairs of free citizens; and in no way should ever be emulated on the federal level, which Mitt vows to do.

No wonder he made Human Event’s ‘Top 10 RINOS’ list in 2005.

John McCain’s foray into the camp of federal bureaucratic nanny-statism is as wide as it is deep. Everything from affirmative action to banning “cheap” guns to federal funding of stem cell research to minimum wage increases to supporting ‘hate crimes’ laws to his namesake legislative assault on free speech to higher CAFE (mileage) standards to ‘family leave’ legislation to winning the endorsement of the Log Cabin Republicans, has shown that this self-proclaimed government reformer is pushing many ‘reforms’ that would please Ted Kennedy.

McCain is downright Gorelian when it comes to the hoax called global warming. In 2002, he pushed to make the grandaddy of all busybody agencies, the EPA, into a cabinet level position. Though savvy enough to avoid co-sponsoring Fred’s Title X global warming masterpiece, McCain has since moved farther and farther left. He and Mike Huckabee are the only two candidates to publicly proclaim their admiration for a mandatory ‘Cap and Trade’ system to deal with CO2 emissions. And he spends his time telling his GOP colleagues how foolish they are to dismiss the subject. No John, you are the fool, and hopefully your and Algore’s efforts to hoodwink the public will meet the disgraced demise they so richly deserve.

And just to keep up with current events, McCain just voted FOR the new ‘Energy Bill’ - signed into law on 12/19. Among its thousands of pages of bureaucrat-speak, it includes a 40% boost in CAFE standards and the outlawing of the incandescent light bulb. What geniuses.

Congressman Duncan Hunter’s vision for the role of the Federal government can best be described in two words: Tenth Amendment. Hunter, along with Reagan, wanted to eliminate the Department of Education in the 1980s. Both viewed it as an illegal and unwise usurption by the feds. Though reality tells us that the liberals and RINOS will never allow that to happen any time soon, Hunter is still running on a platform to gut it, telling the audience during a press conference on FreeRepublic.com: “I would substantially cut the bureaucracy in the Department of Education, top to bottom”.

Both Hunter and Reagan worked (though failed) to overturn the thoroughly overreaching and unconstitutional power grab by the courts banning prayer in schools.

Running for reelection in 1994, Hunter told Public Radio that he wanted to cut the EPA’s budget by 50%. He had this to say about OSHA: “I think 10 percent of OSHA performs a valuable function and keeps the workplace safe,” suggesting a 90% reduction in their budget.

In 1995, Hunter made Hazel O’Leary’s secretive Department of Energy ‘Enemies List’ (which got her in hot water, FWIW). The San Diego Union Tribune reported: A proponent of abolishing DOE and giving its nuclear weapon responsibilities to the Pentagon, Hunter has criticized the agency as having too much bureaucracy and too many consultants financed by its $6.5 billion nuclear waste cleanup account. A new budget authorization passed by the House would cut $742 million from the account. But, Hunter said, referring to CARMA, “When I cut their budget of nonessential consultants, it looks like I missed one.”

While McCain, Huckabee, and Mitt have used hurricane Katrina as foil to point out ‘mismanagement’ of FEMA as they try to score points for their own management prowess, Duncan Hunter has used Katrina as a prime example of the great volunteer work that private citizens do in the event of a disaster.

Hunter led the charge in 2003 to exempt military installations from endangered species laws, saying “These troops need to have places to train, and these training grounds are becoming more and more restricted because of applications, and I think wrongful applications, of our environmental laws.” He told the North County Times, “We went at this with the viewpoint that the most important endangered creature is the 19-year-old Marine rifleman.”

Hunter was rewarded with a zero rating from the League of Conservation Voters.

Hunter also led the charge to eliminate the NEA in the 1990s and was thwarted time and again by the RINOS who sided with the democrats. And just when Hunter and the conservatives had the NEA on the ropes in 2000, they hired a southerner as the head honcho, Bill Ivey, and he charmed his way to more funding, even getting former NEA foe Fred Thompson to toss his support to the agency. Fred told CNN, “If we can do something for rural kids and smaller-state kids, get more resources for art forms outside of New York and California, that’s a good thing.”

And just this month, Hunter voted against the democrats new Energy Bill, which included the new CAFÉ standards as well as the elimination of incandescent light bulbs.

Finally, no one in Congress or elsewhere over the last 26 years has spent more time and energy attempting to kill off the benefits, sanctuaries and the red tape associated with deportations for illegal aliens.

In conclusion, Duncan Hunter has stood his ground for his conservative vision of America. An America that must continue to confront it’s enemies such as China and Iran without fear and doublespeak, an America that must allow its citizens to keep their hard earned dollars in their own pockets, an America that must fight to keep the bureaucratic state from running roughshod over our freedoms and rights, and an America that must toss aside harmful, politically correct niceties and govern in the manner which our founders intended.

When the candidates were asked by the Des Moines Register this year what they would like their legacies to be, Hunter provided the shortest answer:

“I would like to see a country where the day I walk out of the White House, after a couple of terms, the American people are more independent of government than the day that I walked in.”

And in Hunter’s case, he has a long career to prove he means it.

(Stay tuned for Part II of "Vision vs. Pandering", where Alexander covers the candidates records on Illegal Immigration, US Military Strength, and conservatism).

Puerco Pibil Is Fantastic During The Holidays

If you are looking for something totally different to cook during the Christmas holiday season that will blow your guests away... this is it.
I originally posted this back in October and thought I would re-post it today since I am making a double batch (11lb of pork butt !) as we speak.

From October 27th-
If you like Mexican food then pay attention. This recipe is unlike anything you have ever had.
If you have already seen the Robert Rodriguez movie "Once Upon A Time In Mexico", then you may be familiar with Puerco Pibil. (pronounced pih-beel)

If not, go rent the movie and watch it, then view Robert's 10 Minute Cooking School in the special features.

There are two important things in life that all us humans must do and therefore we might as well do them well. Eating is one of those things...(I'll let Rodriguez tell you the other thing) so, since you're gonna' be eating anyway, you might as well learn to cook something worth eating.

THIS is that one thing that you MUST cook and eat in your lifetime if you like Mexican food in the least. If you have guests over, it will blow them away, if not... you will save some of this and take it to total strangers just to share it. Yes, it's that good.

The aroma that fills your kitchen while cooking Puerco Pibil is out of this world wicked good between the pork, the seasonings and especially the banana leaves... unbelievably good and the presentation- spectacular. It is as they say, ..."To Die For".

Here is a youtube video from the movie Once Upon A Time In Mexico with the recipe to get you going...

Below is the full recipe plus a couple tricks and tips I have learned the hard way. Call ahead to local Mexican Grocers to find Banana leaves and ground annato seeds (both very cheap). Entire cost of recipe about $25 max. Will feed 6-8 hungry gringos. (Here is a smaller recipe)

Recipe from Robert Rodriguez.
*Ingredients:*
5 Tbs. ground annato seeds (buy pre-ground annato at Mexican Mkt not whole seeds or paste)
2 Tbs. salt
1 Tbs. whole peppercorns
8 whole allspice
2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. whole cloves
8 garlic cloves, minced
2 habañeros -deveined, seeds removed, I use 4-5 or 8 Jalepenos instead (better flavor to me)
1/2 cup orange juice (I have found that 1-1/2 cups of OJ works better, more sauce)
1/2 cup white vinegar
juice of 5-8 lemons
*splash or shot of tequila(*warning, a shot might get you shot).
5-6 lb. pork butt, cut into 2" cubes
1 lb. banana leaves, whole fresh... I get them at the El Mariachi Mexican grocery in OKC
*Prep. time: 15 minutes (more like 30min's for me)
Marinate time: overnight
Cook time: 4-6 hours
Yield: 6-8 servings*

Combine all whole spices in a old coffee grinder or spice mill, grinder. Grind them well, to a fine powder.
In a blender or food processor, combine spice powder, garlic, habañeros (Jalepenos), orange juice, vinegar, lemon juice, and tequila.
Place the pork in a large 1gal+ ziplock bag and add the marinade; shake well.
Marinate for 12 to 24 hours, shaking 2 or 3 times.
Preheat oven to 325º. Line a baking pan with the banana leaves. you will wrap the pork in them, so be sure to overlap them well and leave enough so the edges will overlap, making a tight "package."
Dump the pork and marinade into the pan; wrap with banana leaves.

Put more leaves on the top. Cover the whole thing with tinfoil and seal the edges so no steam escapes. Bake for 4-6+ hours or until pork is tender and falling apart. I sometimes turn the oven down to 300 and let it cook 6-7 hrs for melt in your mouth tenderness and a little thicker "gravy" sauce.

Serve over a bed of white or Mexican rice.
Garnish with a tomato wedge and fresh jalapeños and/or serrano peppers.

I make homemade refried beans to serve along with the Pibil and rice...
ahhhhhh heaven!

For leftovers, put the leftover rice right in with the pibil and let it soak up the sauce.... when you reheat it. YUMMY.

Tancredo Backers Support Hunter Over Romney

Tom Tancredo may have thrown his personal support to Mitt Romney, but Tancredo's fans aren't buying it. Who are the Tancredo folks themselves backing now?

This from the TANCREDO FAN CAMPAIGN Blog.

Folks, the Primary is about conscience, not about who can beat Hillary. Duncan Hunter was always my second choice. For conscience sake, I must now turn my endorsement to Duncan Hunter.

It's been said, why would anyone endorse another candidate that is lower in the polls than the one that you supported (who dropped out)? Simple: for conscience sake.

Duncan Hunter is a true believer. We both happen to be Baptists too. He is a true Conservative. He will protect our sovereignty as a nation. He will fight Islamic terrorism. He's the only choice we have and he can still win if we get behind him.

I cannot dictate to you what to do with your own vote in the GOP Primaries. But, as the President of the TANCREDO Fan Campaign, I want you to know that I am endorsing Duncan Hunter for President.

How does this affect the TANCREDO Fan Campaign? It doesn't. I support Tom Tancredo. I am one of his biggest fans. And that is what this site was all about. So, I look forward to the next great thing that Tom does or plans and I am behind him 100%. Go Tom GO!

Keywords: Duncan Hunter, GOP, President

Posted by James

THIS is followed by comments from other Tancredo supporters now switching to HUNTER.

Comments

  1. Duncan Hunter was always my second choice too. I agree with everything you said about him. I especially like his strong position on trade. I am still stinging over Tom dropping out when 40+% of the Iowa and NH Republicans are still undecided, and the candidates who do have support are less than that.

Hopefully Duncan will start to show some passion, and talk more about the future instead of the past.

  2. I am in disbelief, too, James and Bobbie. Forty percent of Repubs are UNdecided. Tom performed amazingly well at the Iowa debate two weeks ago and I'm certain he would have pulled good numbers. This is too much to handle right now!

  3. Unfortunately, Tom didn't think he had a snowball's chance, so that's why he made his hasty decision - he was too afraid of Huckabee and McCain early wins since they were leading in Iowa and NH polls.

Tom was on talk radio tonight and he sounded great. He explained exactly why he chose Romney - after going through his template of 4 to 5 issues and eliminating candidates based on that - and then after sitting down with Mitt for over an hour with Tim Russert's Meet the Press transcript in hand, they discussed all the issues that are important to Tom and his cause and he was assured that Romney was going to follow through. He also said again that Romney could go the distance.

When asked if he thought Romney would renege, Tom, like he always says, "I have to put it in God's hands." Tom even said that Romney had questions about how he would be able to do certain things - and Tom had to "teach" him all about Executive Orders. Tom said most governors aren't that well knowledgeable about this.

Tom also said that he's not getting anything for his endorsement like a cabinet position - especially DHS, as he said he'd never get Senate confirmation. What he did say is that he believes he can still have influence over the candidates and, like Tom said, he'll never be silent on this issue.

    I like Duncan Hunter.

God Bless you all. Hang in there. We're in for the ride of our lives.

  4. I just cannot see anyone in the elite 'top tier' putting anyone in the 'second tier' anywhere in their administration, and I do not see anyone in the top tier keeping their word to secure the borders and go after employers.

  6. I agree with your comment (#4) msbobbie. This is probably the reason why I am most heartbroken over Tom getting out. As the web-master for the campaign, I poured in countless hours into the campaign, often-times working all hours of the night, not going to sleep and going straight to my day job. And I drove up to New Hampshire many times to be with the campaign and video Tom and support the efforts. I told Tom that he must win because he must put a stop to the NAU. Mitt Romney will bring in the NAU and cannot be trusted. McCain, Giuliani, Thompson and Huckabee will all do the same. Duncan Hunter is our only choice now, I believe, as Tancredo supporters.

  7. I recommend that Tancredo supporters join the Hunter meetups.

    user iconJames on Saturday, 22 December 2007, 20:09 MST # |

  8. Thank you James. I am still licking my wounds a bit, but I am solidly behind Duncan Hunter's bid. And keep firing your artillery. There is no cease fire on the range until mission accomplished. Now fire for effect.
Speaking for other Hunter's rangers we have always considered the Tancredo folks our closest ally and welcome you into the fold.

New Hampshire Looking Better For Hunter

This Just out...
FORMER NEW HAMPSHIRE SENATOR BOB SMITH ENDORSES DUNCAN HUNTER FOR PRESIDENT
"Hunter is the Inspirational Leader America Needs"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 21, 2007
Tuftonboro, NH “Former Senator Bob Smith, a staple of the New Hampshire Republican conservative movement, today endorsed Congressman Duncan Hunter for President of the United States. Describing him has an "inspirational leader" and the one best qualified to carry the "Reagan Torch," Senator Smith sent a letter to his fellow conservatives throughout New Hampshire making them aware of his support, a copy of which is provided.
Smith was initially elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from 1985-1990, before being elected to the U.S. Senate where he served until 2003. During his congressional tenure, Senator Smith established himself as a strong Republican and the most conservative leader in the Northeast.
"I am honored and privileged today to receive the endorsement of my good friend Senator Bob Smith of New Hampshire," stated Hunter. "For many years, we have worked together to bring conservative values to Washington D.C. On several issues, including building America's military, the sanctity of human life, and protecting American's 2nd Amendment rights, Senator Smith has led with conviction and principle. It means a great deal to have the confidence of a leader who has done so much for our nation."
Senator Smith's endorsement letter follows:
Dear New Hampshire Friends:
After spending several weeks listening to all of the candidates, I have decided to support Congressman Duncan Hunter for President. I do not take this decision lightly. There are a lot of fine men running for this office and I know that many of you may have already made your choice. Your vote in the "First in the Nation Primary" is a very precious and personal right. Your decision will likely determine who will be the next leader of the free world. What an awesome responsibility! I only ask that you give serious consideration to the points that I make in this letter of endorsement for Congressman Hunter before you vote.
The Republican Party, but more importantly our nation, needs strong conservative and inspirational leadership as we continue to face the threats to our liberty in the form of immorality, corruption, terrorism, a mountain of debt, border insecurity, loss of jobs and attempts to weaken our national defense. Here is why Duncan Hunter is that leader!
I am sure that you are aware that I fought the battle for the conservative cause in New Hampshire for over 20 years. It was not an easy battle. Conservatives pay a heavy price for standing up for their principles. I can speak from personal experience on that. The Republican Party has lost its majority in Congress because it slowly and steadily has walked away from the "core values" that have made it a great party for the past 150 years in America. Remember Ronald Reagan? Liberals and moderates worked hard to defeat him in the New Hampshire primary in 1980 but he prevailed in spite of them! He will be remembered as one of our greatest Presidents because he stood on principle, but also because we conservatives in New Hampshire gave him the victory that propelled him to the White House! When President Reagan came into the oval office in the morning, he knew exactly where he wanted to take the country. He did not need an inbox full of directions, consultants, polls or focus groups to tell him what his core values were. There will never be another Ronald Reagan but fellow Californian Duncan Hunter can pick up the Reagan torch and light the way for America to come back from the dangers we now face. Congressman Hunter is a moral man, an inspirational leader and a no nonsense conservative who will always put "principle above politics" in the image of the late great New Hampshire patriot Meldrim Thomson.
I had the enormous privilege to serve with Congressman Hunter for 18 years in Congress. He has been my personal friend for nearly 25 years. I can personally attest that he is a man of impeccable moral and family values, a great patriot and a leader. I have seen him fight even when others were prepared to give up. Congressman Hunter inspired me and many other young conservatives in the 1980s to continue the fight even when it was bleak. This has not been an easy campaign for Congressman Hunter. While he has been out on the campaign trail his son has been serving in Iraq and the Hunters lost their entire home in the recent fires in Southern California. He has been largely ignored by the pollsters and the media. I urge the people of New Hampshire to send a message to the pollsters and the Washington media elite. The people elect a President not the pollsters! You have the opportunity to do for the nation what you did when you elected President Reagan in 1980 by sending Duncan Hunter out of New Hampshire with a big win and on to the White House in January of 2009! Can you imagine listening to CNN and all of the talking heads trying to explain how they were wrong as Hunter claimed victory? Wouldn't that be worth the price of admission? You can make it happen with your vote in January! Do not be intimidated by these spinmasters. You control the destiny of America and not them!
The American people need to take control of this country. We are a republic, not a democracy. We elect leaders to stand up for us as they make decisions. Duncan Hunter has proven that he can lead. He has been tested. If given the chance as President, he will inspire people, young and old, to rally to our nation in this time of need. Congressman Duncan Hunter for 25 years has stood up for the rights of the unborn, to balance the budget, to cut the pork out of the spending bills, to strengthen our national defense by supporting our troops and providing them the weapons they need, to seal off our borders by building a fence along the US/Mexican border and to keep American jobs in America. He is a known entity. You do not have to guess about what he might do on these critical threats to our security. Imagine President Duncan Hunter leading our nation and using the "bully pulpit" to lead on these issues! I am proud to support this great American patriot for President. If you really want to see change, then I urge you to vote for him. He is what American needs now more than ever! Thank you!
Senator Bob Smith

JC Watts VP on Romney "Dream Team"

This via blognetnews, the OPNS and full story at Californians for Romney...

Vice President J.C. Watts?

The Oklahoma Political News Service writes...
"Besides winning our Vice Presidential poll question 3 times, there are many reasons for the Romney-Watts ticket. In the classical political sense, Watts helps Romney get votes he otherwise wouldn't get. Watts allows Mitt to run with a former Baptist preacher (not named Huckabee), and gives him a running mate with rock solid conservative credentials. He also brings in what is likely to be an unprecedented percentage of the black vote for the GOP, forcing the Dems to spend money in places they otherwise wouldn't have to. After he's in office JC would be the natural person to put in charge of Romney's education reform policies that include: school choice vouchers, more testing, and more emphasis on math and science."

And just who do the Californians for Romney folks think would be the best Secretary of Defense in a Romney "Dream Team" administration?

"A Vietnam veteran and Army Ranger, Duncan Hunter has served on the House Armed Services Committee for the last 27 years. He is also the author of the Secure Fence act, and has a son who recently returned from a couple of tours of Iraq and is U.S. Marine. No more stupid questions from the media to the Defense Secretary about "would you send your son to Fallajuh?" They would already know the answer.

If Romney is smart he will put together the best conservatives have to offer for his administration, after all as Ronald Reagan said, "Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don't interfere as long as the policy you've decided upon is being carried out."

Person Of The Year, I Second The Motion

Okie Campaigns blog has this absolutely perfect "Person of the Year" post considering what was said in August and September about this man by democrats and the media as a whole and the reality today of just how wrong they all were and just how right this man was.
This man's efforts no doubt have shaped the entire middle east and in fact the world into his vision, under his direction and according to his plan that vision is now virtually a complete reality.
Bravo to Okie Campaigns.

MY PERSON OF THE YEAR...

"Let's have an award for someone who has actually made the world a better place. Since January of this year Gen. Petraeus has led the greatest tango whacking mission in history. This has made it possible for Iraqis to take back their lives and start working on a civil society. The incredible change in the security situation was made possible by his strategy of Counter-Insurgency, implemented by our peerless military, and finally the long-awaited Awakening that started in Anbar...

I give you the Person of the Year for those of us who prefer action against evil to bloviation against common sense.

Trade With China?

Another Oklahoma Blogger Joins Hunter's Rangers

The Local Malcontent Blog - "Total Choctaw, Total American", is the latest local blogger to join "Hunter's Rangers" in support of presidential candidate Duncan Hunter (R) CA, following Tom Tancredo's expected withdrawal from the race today.

Securing our borders and winning the war against radical Islam are the primary issues for Mal, but he sees Hunter as the only true conservative in the Republican field. In fact, a Hunter presidency is our last hope for getting our borders secured at all and he is a true champion for the unborn, the military, the fair tax, fair trade with China, gun ownership and for individual rights.

Many are predicting that Hunter could benefit the most from Tancredo withdrawing from the race as Mike Huckabee is now moving downward in the polls following his brief surge this past month.

An endorsement from Tancredo himself might be all Duncan Hunter needs to break out of the box the media has kept him in thus far. Time will tell.

One thing is for sure, Duncan Hunter is better off with the Local Malcontent on his team.
Welcome aboard my friend!

In the post below are details of how this can affect the Republican nomination process and which candidates stand to benefit most from this announcement.

Look for Duncan Hunter to offer Tancredo a high level position in a Hunter administration. That fence isn't dead yet folks!

Upset In The Making?

From Spank That Donkey Blog via Grassrevolt...

Hunter-Tancredo-Keyes- Fourth in Real Clear Polls
Well one thing is dead on certain, and the MSM wouldn’t let it slip from their lips…. Rep. Hunter, Rep. Tancredo, and Alan Keyes could be 13.7% or fourth nationally among the Republican Candidates…. according to this Real Clear Politics (RCP Caucus/Primary average) Poll.

Guiliani 22.5 Huckabee 20.1 Romney 15.4 McCain 12.4 Thompson 11 and Paul 4.9 which equals 86.3%

Logically this leaves Hunter, Tancredo and Keyes at 13.7% , but that would also include undecided. However, what if these bottom three candidates chose one among themselves to get behind, and tried to derail the ever issue changing, explaining, & dancing front runners? What if the voters at that point, had a clearly Conservative candidate to choose from?

Undoubtedly if they met and decided today to that Rep. Tancredo and Alan Keyes would drop out of the race and throw through their support and campaign resources behind Rep. Duncan Hunter how much of the 13.7 % would he capture? I would think he would also pull support away from the front runners also, making up for the truly undecided vote, because many of them just can’t bring themselves to back the ‘wiggly’ Conservative front runners, or the hopelessly down in polls 2nd tier candidates, “Who Just Can’t Win”.

These three have got some soul searching to do because it is just a matter of weeks, before the primaries and caucuses begin.

(Spank That Donkey editor’s note: If conservatism is to survive, two of these candidates need to drop out and unite behind the other. Who has the most experience, the strongest record for getting things done, the most national security ability, and the most electability? Duncan Hunter is the obvious choice. While I love Tom Tancredo and Alan Keyes, and would consider supporting either of them if Hunter were not around, perhaps we all need to suggest to them to become involved in Congressman Hunter’s campaign so conservatism can win. I think both of them would consider it because they are REAL conservatives, and PRINCIPLED, UPSTANDING men instead of being just ‘politicians’. They care about the cause, and not about themselves.

Example Of Why Change Is Needed In Oklahoma

Mike McCarville has this report on Governor Brad "Pinwheel" Henry's latest flip-flop which could cost the state dearly in job growth and economic development in addition to other areas.

Oklahoma has suffered another blow because of Governor Henry’s veto of bipartisan lawsuit reform legislation during the 2007 legislative session, Senator Co-President Pro Tem Glenn Coffee said today.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Judicial Hellholes report published by the nonpartisan American Tort Reform Association (ATRA) gives Oklahoma a “dishonorable mention.”

“America’s job-creators pay attention to the Judicial Hellholes report. This is very bad news for Oklahoma, and it is the latest in a long list of damaging publicity Governor Henry created for our state with his veto.

This report creates another hurdle in our efforts to attract jobs and grow our economy,” said Coffee, R-Oklahoma City.

SB 507 passed the Senate and House of Representatives with bipartisan majorities during the 2007 legislative session, and included 18 of the 28 reforms Henry proposed in 2004.

Despite previous promises to support meaningful lawsuit reform, Henry flip-flopped and vetoed SB 507.

'Bout time for another big expensive fishing trip with your lawyer buddies there Gov'nr?
Time for another post on how Republicans are to blame for the bad economy in Oklahoma there Okie Funk?
Time for another cry to elect more democrats like Andrew Rice to continue Oklahoma's anti-business, anti-growth, anti-jobs policies?

Time to complete the change started in 2004, continued in 2006 and finalized in the upcoming 2008 election... taking control of Oklahoma AWAY from the socialists, the trial lawyers and the democrats that have been feeding them and giving it to the people for once in our history.

DEMOCRAT PROPOSED BILL GUTS BORDER FENCE

By Jerome R. Corsi

U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.
Republican presidential hopeful Duncan Hunter is blasting a Democrat-sponsored bill that would eliminate the requirement passed by Congress to build a double-layered fence covering 854 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border.

"By eliminating the double fence requirement, the Democratic Congress is going to make it easier for drug and human smugglers to cross our Southern land border," said Hunter. "This goes against the interests of any family that has been touched by illegal drugs or any American who has seen their job taken by an illegal alien."

The Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations bill would specifically eliminate the mandate of the Secure Fence Act of 2006.

As WND reported last week, an amendment submitted by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, and co-sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, for the Department of Homeland Security 2008 budget was aimed at gutting the already-approved Secure Fence Act, which was adopted with the promise hundreds of miles of physical fencing would help secure the U.S. border with Mexico.

The Hutchison amendment allows the secretary of homeland security to use discretion in deciding whether a fence was the most appropriate means to achieve and maintain operational control along the border with Mexico.

DHS is on record as preferring in many instances the construction of "pedestrian fences" or "virtual fences" instead of double-layered barriers as required in the 2006 law.

"The Hutchison amendment gives DHS virtually total discretion over how and where the fence is built," said Steve Elliott, president of the activist group Grassfire.org.

He explained the DHS would not be required to build fencing in any particular location and the double-layer mandate would be "totally gone."

"I find it odd that such an important amendment which releases DHS from specific requirements of an existing law would be passed by a simple voice vote in the Senate and then buried in the massive omnibus bill," Elliott said.

"The American people reasonably expect that a double-layer fence will be built, but Congress has always had other plans," he argued. "This amendment should be stripped from the bill."

Hunter agreed.

"The success of the San Diego Border Fence demonstrates the overall effectiveness of the double-layered approach and the importance of extending this infrastructure across our southern land border," Hunter said.

"Pulling back from the double-fence mandate is a prescription for failure that will only allow more smugglers, criminals and illegal aliens to enter the United States through our land border with Mexico," the California congressman added.

"If enacted," Hunter concluded, "this legislation would represent a significant step backwards in the effort to secure our borders."

Grassfire.org is running a campaign to encourage citizens to fax Congress to demand "the fence be built as promised."

Duncan Hunter Gets Highest Rating From "God Voter.org"

Thanks to ‘Ohio for Duncan Hunter’ for posting this:

Duncan Hunter Is The Only Candidate To Get An “A” Rating From God Voter!

Current Status: Congressman Duncan Hunter has shared his Christian testimony.

While we don’t agree with all of his opinions, we were impressed with the majority of them and particularly impressed with his candor and courage (e.g., see his answer to question 9).

We knew very little about this Congressman from California until receiving his answers, which made us take another look. Frankly, we liked what we found, including the following:

He walks his talk. His pro-life, anti-embryonic stem cell research, anti-pornography, anti-illegal immigration and pro-strong defense positions are backed by the bills he authored, the border fence he built, his service as an Army Ranger in Vietnam and his own son having served in Iraq and Afghanistan as a US Marine.

Congressman Hunter, who has been married to one wife, is a Christian who testifies about the Lord when asked, has been re-elected six times, has gravitas, and his tenure as the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee should be useful to leading a nation fighting two wars.

Why isn’t Congressman Hunter doing better in the polls?

The main reason may be most people knowing as little about him as we knew prior to receiving his answers, simplistically as the “border guy” from a border area. We think the problem is exposure, not quality. In terms of the latter, he is the strongest candidate in the field.

Congressman Hunter, we thank you for your Christ-honoring testimony, congratulate you on your candidacy, and strongly encourage you and your staff to remain in the race to the end. We want you to win the Presidency. But even if you don’t, we think the Lord will be pleased with a candidate who ran the race focused on Him instead of the poll numbers.

Our rating for Congressman Hunter as the next President of the United States is an A.

Please click here or on Congressman Hunter’s photo above to visit his campaign website.

Oklahoma Ice Storm Moonbat Update

Are you ready for this one folks? (I doubt it)
The Ice hasn't even all melted and all the electricity back on before the moonbats over at Blue Oklahoma publish Doc Hoc's (better known as Professor Kurt aka Okie Funk) latest note from the septic tank out back.

You will never guess in a million years what (who) the local democrat blogger is blaming the ice storm on.

According to the reverse logic of this so-called college professor, the worst ice-storm in Oklahoma history is the result of your electing Jim Inhofe to the Senate. He stoops so low as to attempt to blame the deaths from the ICE STORM on Republicans.

Okie Funk wasn't named as one of the biggest losers in the 2007 Oklahoma "Worst Blogger of the Year" for nothing folks.

Is there absolutely nothing the liberal democrats won't say or do to try and lie/scare/buy/steal your vote?

It is reprehensible for these selfish partisan hacks to put their personal politics ahead of the truth at a time like this, when Oklahoma is torn apart... not from anything man has done or could do to the environment... but from the worst ICE STORM in state history.

To now claim that so-called man-made GLOBAL WARMING is the cause is irresponsible and a horrible lie purely perpetrated for political gain, there is absolutely no evidence to support this outrageous claim, yet the truth doesn't stop the far left democrat party moonbats from printing their hatred.

Where is a good power outage when you need one?

Lack Of Pardon For Border Agents Ripped

Washington Times

By Jerry Seper
December 13, 2007

Republican Duncan Hunter bemoaned the pardons of drug dealers while two border agents remain in prison. (Associated Press)

Several members of Congress derided President Bush yesterday for not including former U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean among the 29 pardons that he issued this week.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican and presidential candidate, said that "two names were conspicuously missing" from the list, which included carjackers, drug dealers, a moonshiner, a man convicted of stealing government property and another sentenced for receiving kickbacks in military procurement contracts.

"By refusing to pardon agents Ramos and Compean, the president has missed yet another opportunity to correct this miscarriage of justice," he said. "The fact that the drug dealer, whose testimony sent the agents to jail has been indicted for running drugs across the border while serving as a federal witness necessitates a presidential pardon.

"Agents Ramos and Compean deserve to be pardoned and returned to their families for Christmas," he said.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, California Republican, said the pardon list includes eight drug dealers, saying Mr. Bush's "heartless ignoring of the fundamental miscarriage of justice in the case of agents Ramos and Compean ... is a snub to the families and a slap in the face to millions of Americans who have pleaded with the president to show some mercy."

"Instead, he turns around and shows mercy to drug dealers and other criminals and leaves Ramos and Compean to suffer in solitary confinement," he said.

Ramos, 37, and Compean, 28, were sentenced in October 2006 to 11- and 12-year prison terms, respectively, for shooting a Mexican drug-smuggling suspect in the buttocks as he fled to Mexico after refusing their orders to stop and abandoning his van with 743 pounds of marijuana. The case is being appealed.

A federal appeals court judge, during a Dec. 3 hearing, said the government "overreacted" in the agents' prosecution. A decision could take several weeks... more

"I Survived The Great Ice Storm Of 2007" T-Shirts

After being without electricity for seven days, I would like to give a "shout out" to the right Reverend Robin Meyers whom as I pointed out just two posts below was praying for God to forgive us (humans) for causing global warming just as the first layer of ice was being applied to most of Oklahoma one week ago today.

I say first layer of ice because several heavy layers were applied before the worst ice storm in our history was finished destroying most of the trees and most of the electricity in the process. God has spoken Reverend Meyers and it seems we are square now on that whole global warming business.
Let it go.

We needed to be praying to not freeze to death instead of worrying about overheating.
I know I sure did some praying for those OG&E guys to find their way to our neighborhood, and it wasn't to fix the A/C.

Through some creative engineering, I was able to get some power and some heat, but for a week all our meals were eaten cold in the living room huddled around a small heater with some candles and a portable tv, power cords throughout gave it that empty warehouse feel.
Mc Donalds and fast food for every meal may be cursed by health nuts and the left, but it pretty much saved our lives this week... and I feel just fine thank you very much.

Coming in from the cold to a house that wasn't much warmer than the outside was frustrating and demoralizing... we looked forward to bedtime because it was warmer. Just like when camping, as soon as the sun goes down my eyes started getting sleepy with no heat, lights and cable tv. Sleeping becomes a form of entertainment as well as comfort.

The electricity finally came on today about 2:00 and you would have thought we won the lottery, within minutes the heat was up to temp, I was in the shower and we were headed shopping!

So Dr. Meyers, next time you consider praying about humans ability to change the weather or affect climate changes... remember December 11th 2007 and your closing prayer.

Remember just how silly you sounded trying to give 'man' (humans) the "credit" (or blame) for global warming, just as God was demonstrating to you right here in Oklahoma who is really in charge of the weather and the planet.(Hint, not you or me)

Oh yeah,... Get your "I Survived The Great OKIE ICE-STORM of 2007" T-shirts while they are "hot".

Pulpit Pundit Robin Meyers- Weather Prophet !

You just can't make stuff like this up folks.
While braving the ice this morning to pick up a couple of things from Crest Foods, I decided to switch the radio from NPR over to see what the Reverend Robin Meyers was doing over at 1520am.

It was coming up on the top of the hour and so Rev Meyers was starting to wrap things up.
He was talking about a Republican congressman who was discussing the college bowl playoff system and condemned him and the Republican congress for "discussing trivial matters like football instead of ending the illegal and immoral war that we had no business starting in the first place."

That little rant got my attention, so I hung around for the closing prayer wondering what in the wide wide world of sports we might get.

The pulpit pundit did not disappoint me, as you shall see.

Rev. Meyers began the prayer...

"Our Heavenly Father, we come to you on this Sunday, December Second...
(I suddenly realize I have been listening to a replay of last Sunday's sermon) ..."on this December 2nd where it is unusually warm outside for this time of the year Oh God and we know that man is to blame for this fact and pray Dear God that you will hear our prayers and help us select leaders that will protect the planet instead of destroying it..."

Why (you might wonder) were we listening to a replay of last Sunday's sermon?

As I said above, I was driving in an unusually early ICE STORM at the time and Rev Meyers Mayflower Congregational Church (UCC) had been canceled today due to the near blizzard and icy conditions.

He was actually praying to God that it was man's (evil Republicans) fault for the heatwave in December... as the sleet and snow hit my windshield during an unusually early ice storm!

Like I said, this stuff is too good to have made it up.
Somewhere, poor Woody Guthrie must be embarrassed by what his "dream party/religion" has become.

Amen.

Kittenstomper Supports Killing Babies

In a lame attempt to try and stir up some traffic for his pathetic blog following his horrible performance during the 2007 Oklahoma Worst Blog of the Year Awards, Kittenstomper Blog (yup thats the name) is attacking me for being pro-life.
He refers to me as "the rabid base they have founded their party upon."

He writes...
"Anti-abortion extremists claim abortion is murder. Yet none of them have ever tried to back legislation to prosecute women who have abortions. If abortion is indeed murder, then not advocating murder charges shows the hypocrisy of the argument. Clearly, they cannot even answer the question."

If he had bothered to actually read any of my posts on the subject, (like my post "When is Abortion Justified" in the right sidebar) he would have known that I have in fact advocated that abortion is "1st Degree Prenatal Homicide". The penalty for such is for the courts to decide, not me but I would treat it just like any other murder or manslaughter case.

"Allowing exceptions in the case of rape or incest means anti-abortion ideologues allow the murder of innocent fetus's only when they are victims of a crime.
Not allowing such exceptions forces young ladies to give birth to their brother, or wives to give birth to the murderer of their husbands."

If he would have actually read the link to my blog that he used in his post, he would have noticed that Republican presidential candidate Duncan Hunter has called for a ban on all abortions- period and has introduced legislation every year for the past 10+ years on it. He is my candidate of choice for president.
No inconsistency here.

He ends his defense of the indefensible with a video about what it was like before women had contraception options available today and how they got abortions. Today we have more forms of birth control than we do ways to have sex. It is available for free and it is available for use even up to 24 hrs AFTER having sex.

Yet approximately 1.5 million unborn children are murdered by their mothers in this country every single year to the cheers of children hating white men like Kittenstomper.

Yet he has the nerve to condemn me for speaking out on behalf of those innocent ones who CANNOT speak for themselves?

So be it. If I am to be condemned, then let it be for protecting life itself.

In his world, defending the life of an unborn child is being a "Pro-Life Wingnut" while demanding the murder of that unborn child is considered being a "Pro-choice Progressive".

Shame on you kittenstomper, whoever you are... shame on you.
Kittenstomper supports preborn baby killing.
Hmmm. considering his blog name, it's not surprising I guess.

I'll throw him a bone and some hits as well.

Oklahoma Leads The Way On Illegal Immigration

As national legislators consider enacting Oklahoma's tough immigration bill across the entire US, local democrats are still in denial and are calling for a repeal of HR 1804. (due to it's success?)

Mike McCarville at The McCarville Report Online has the full story.

Bravo to Oklahoma Republicans for leading America on this tough issue that others are afraid to tackle. 100 years of oppressive democrat rule is breaking down and being replaced by leadership that actually leads.

Origin Of Black Gold, Texas Tea, Debated

Now I'm going to advance a rather radical idea here. I could be wrong, but so could the rest of you. Nobody knows for sure.

It begins with a belief... if you look up the origins of crude oil, you will see that we don't know for sure. All we have is theory(s) and a 'consensus' of opinion (just like global warming). Scientists "believe" that organic material was crushed and heated into inorganic material deep in the earth.

They can extract oil from animals and from plants, but it's not petroleum.
Man has not been able to make petroleum. Refine it, yes... fabricate it, not so much.

What they didn't teach us in school was that there are other scientists around the world who believe that oil didn't come from dinosaurs and plants and they make more sense to me than the plants and dinosaurs theory ever did.

Sure, we can produce less efficient/more expensive alternatives to petroleum from a variety of vegetable oils. But why drive the price of everything we eat up to replace something that may not need replacing in the first place?

There are examples of oil fields replenishing themselves across the globe just like at Eugene Island 330 in the Gulf of Mexico offshore near Louisiana which has been "mysteriously" refilling and producing more oil than was ever expected. The oil appears to be refilling into the huge reservoir from far below near the earths core.

"What captivated scientists, though, was a deep fault in the bottom corner of the computer scan that was gushing oil like a garden hose. "We could see the stream," Dr. Anderson says. "It wasn't even debated that it was happening."

Woods Hole's Dr. Whelan, invited by Dr. Anderson to join the Eugene Island investigation, postulated that superheated methane gas -- a compound that is able to absorb vast amounts of oil -- was carrying crude from a deep source below. The age of the crude pushed through the stream, and its hotter temperature helped support that theory."

Where is the oil coming from then if not from dinosaur blood and plant juice as most scientist theorize?

One theory is that oil is a naturally produced element dating back to the origin of the planet itself by a bacteria living deep underground reacting with hydrocarbons.

In this 2003 story several theories are discussed as to the origins of petroleum and it's ongoing replenishment.

"I don't think anybody's arguing that gas couldn't be generated from the mantle."

Wikipedia has this in Abiogenic Petroleum Origins which is but one of the theories out there.

Dr Gold here in the US has a similar but slightly different explanation.

Okay, let's recap.
Scientists don't know where petroleum originates.
Oilfields are somehow refilling and replenishing their supplies.
Most Scientists agree that it is possible for oil to be created at the earths core as a byproduct of the activity.

Yet the 'consensus' of opinion is that it came from a limited number of dinosaurs and plant life that inhabited the planet eons ago, that somehow all got squished into a bunch of giant underground oceans of oil, but is in limited supply and does not replenish itself.

Other theories say it could not possibly have come from organic material but instead like most other things on this planet has been here from the beginning and is a naturally occurring result of the earths core activity and the carbon cycle from Co2 to rain to sedimentation through the earths crust down to be recycled back into the system and into the oil reservoirs deep below.

Since nobody knows for sure, I believe that like most everything, Oil is part of God's plan for the planet and is not anything man will have significant effect upon. Drill away boys.

Is oil part of the cycle of the planet's activities or smashed dinosaurs converted into the evil end of all life as environmentalists would have you believe?

Makes this whole ethanol scare sound kinda' corny doesn't it?

Violent Crime In Iraq Reaches Yearly LOW

Thursday, 06 December 2007
Task Force Marne Public Affairs

FORWARD OPERATING BASE HAMMER — Iraqi Police in the Mada’in Qada recently reported yearly lows for violent crime to officers of the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team (HBCT).

The 3rd HBCT deployed to Iraq in March in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and has operated in the qada, southeast of Baghdad, throughout the deployment.

Iraqi Police in the qada forward crime statistics to their Coalition Force partners at the end of each month. The statistics are compiled by police officers at the five police stations throughout the qada.

For November, Iraqi Police reported eight murders and five kidnappings. This is a significant drop from the yearly high in May of 37 murders and 22 kidnappings.

“In 2005 the Mada’in Qada had 355 murders. In 2006 the qada had 631 murders. This year we expect to have about 290 murders,” said Maj. David Fivecoat, from Delaware, Ohio, 3rd HBCT operations officer. “The downward trend in murders is due to several reasons: the work of the Soldiers of the 3rd HBCT, the development of over 3,000 Concerned Local Citizens, and the continued improvement of the Iraqi Police. The decrease in murders is a key indicator that safety and security are returning to the qada. It is an encouraging sign for its 1.2 million residents.”

Capt. Liz Cain, 59th Military Police Company commander, attributes the drop in crime to improvements in the Iraqi Police, security, and the economy. She further explained that Concerned Local Citizen groups have contributed to the improving security situation.

“These individuals are not only taking a stand against terrorists, but also against lawless behavior within their communities,” Cain said.

Mada’in Iraqi Police District Commander, Brig. Gen. Adnan Jamad Kathim said through a translator, “misdemeanor crime decreased 40 percent, improvised explosive device incidents decreased 66 percent and car bombings decreased 100 percent from October.”

Cain believes Iraqi Police training is a significant factor in the criminal activity decrease in the qada as well. Dozens of Policemen have attended the Ministry of Interior (MOI) investigative courses in Baghdad.

“Recently, many Iraqi Policemen have been educated on crime scene procedures and evidence collection,” she said. “They have come back from the MOI investigative course with the ability to piece a case together.”

When evidence and paperwork is collected and taken to the judge, Cain said, a warrant is issued for the arrest, or if the individual is already detained, he is permitted to be held pending a trial date.

“The completion of this process and the actual convictions and jailing of criminals have increased the population’s trust in the Iraqi Police and encourages them to call the police at the first sign of suspicious behavior,” Cain said. “This trust between the populace and the Iraqi Police has grown and they have become partners in fighting crime. We can expect the crime levels to continue to drop.”

The 59th MP Company is currently attached to the 3rd HBCT. The 3rd HBCT, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga., has been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since March

Democrat Culture Of Corruption

Disgraced Democrat Indicted In New York
A federal grand jury on Tuesday indicted Norman Hsu, a top Democratic fundraiser accused of cheating investors of at least $20 million and using some of the money to make illegal donations to political campaigns.
SLIDESHOW: Hsu’s Donation Recipients
In the 15-count indictment returned in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, the government accused the 56-year-old clothing-industry entrepreneur of duping investors nationwide with a massive Ponzi scheme. The government said Hsu also violated federal campaign finance laws by making contributions to various political candidates in the names of others.A message left with a lawyer for Hsu was not immediately returned.Federal prosecutors said Hsu hoped his lavish campaign contributions would help draw money to his scheme by raising his public profile. To achieve his aims, prosecutors said, Hsu pressured many of his victims to contribute thousands of dollars to various candidates for president and Congress.According to the California Attorney General's Office, Hsu was the mastermind of a "Ponzi-type" scheme to buy and sell latex gloves that defrauded about 20 investors throughout the state out of approximately $1 million.A Ponzi scheme pays high "profits" to investors using money from new investors to the scheme, without actually generating revenues from any real business.Hsu never showed up for his sentencing in 1992, and eluded authorities for 15 years, later surfacing as a major Democratic Party contributor. On Aug. 31, Hsu surrendered to authorities in Redwood City, only to post $2 million cash bail later that day.He then failed to show up for a scheduled bail hearing and a judge issued a no-bail warrant for his arrest.

High-Level Democratic Donor

According to Federal Election Commission records, a Norman Hsu -- with apparel-related business names and addresses listed in New York and California -- contributed $260,000 to political parties, most since 2004.Recipients included the Democratic Party and Democratic U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Barack Obama, D-Ill., Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., John Kerry, D-Mass., and Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.

Hsu was once a valued supporter of Clinton, raising more than $1.2 million for her and other Democratic candidates in recent years.Clinton's presidential campaign returned $850,000 in donations raised by Hsu.Clinton, previously had planned only to give to charity $23,000 she received from Hsu for her presidential and senatorial campaigns and to her political action committee, HillPac.

The FBI is investigating whether Hsu paid so-called straw donors to send campaign contributions to Clinton and other candidates, a law enforcement official has said."In light of recent events and allegations that Mr. Norman Hsu engaged in an illegal investment scheme, we have decided out of an abundance of caution to return the money he raised for our campaign," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a statement. "An estimated 260 donors this week will receive refunds totaling approximately $850,000 from the campaign."Sen. Barrack Obama's campaign has also returned donations made by Norman Hsu.Wolfson said the Clinton campaign also would vigorously review its fundraisers, including thorough criminal background checks, in the future."In any instances where a source of a bundler's income is in question, the campaign will take affirmative steps to verify its origin," he said. The amount that the campaign identified as raised by Hsu would make him one of her top fundraisers.During the first six months of this year, her presidential campaign raised $52 million from individual contributors, second to Obama, who raised $58.5 million.

Charges: Cheated Investors Out $20 Million

It said Hsu used the ponzi scheme money to further his fraudulent aims, sometimes paying the large interest gains he had promised to those who had invested earliest in the scheme.Prosecutors said he eventually cheated the investors out of at least $20 million. He faces six counts of mail fraud, six counts of wire fraud and three counts of violating the Federal Election Campaign Act.If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on each of the mail and wire fraud charges, and five years on each of the federal campaign finance charges. He also could face millions of dollars in fines.Hsu is in custody in California on unrelated charges and was expected to appear in federal court in Manhattan in several weeks, prosecutors said.

Ethanol Policy - What A Turkey

December 3, 2007

Ethanol subsidies are raising our food prices - dubbed the "Thanksgiving Tax" because it upped the cost we paid for Thanksgiving dinner.

Turkey farmers need almost three pounds of corn for every pound of meat put on the birds. But they must outbid those who buy up the corn to make ethanol, thanks to a 51-cents-per-gallon ethanol tax credit and other federal incentives.

America paid $69 million extra for our Thanksgiving turkeys due to ethanol mandates. That's what Joel Brandenberger of the National Turkey Federation told a Heritage Foundation audience. But it's just a small part of what he labeled the Thanksgiving Tax.

With almost a fourth of the corn crop now diverted to ethanol, it's costlier to feed the chickens, the hogs and the grain-fed cattle. Egg prices are up. Corn meal, corn syrup, and even my personal favorite (popcorn!) are pricier. So is almost all food, as other grains are in higher demand as a substitute for corn.

Bottom line: America pays $9 billion a year more for our food because of ethanol policy. The problem is growing faster than any crop. A recent U.S. Department of Agriculture report says farmers are planting more corn rather than other grains, constantly reducing the supply and thus raising the price for those crops. High grain costs are discouraging farmers from raising cattle and other animals, thus further increasing meat and egg prices. The food industry has a website outlining the ripple effect on our groceries.

That's the bad news. Now the worse news: Congress is about to mandate that we triple the use of ethanol. So take all these extra costs and multiply them by three or more.

Today's mandates already require gasoline sellers to blend in at least 5 billion gallons of ethanol a year. With a 51-cent-a-gallon subsidy, this costs taxpayers $4.5 billion on top of higher food prices. Congress plans to triple the mandate to 15 billion gallons a year. The House and Senate each have already agreed on that as part of their energy bill, but the legislation is still hung up in one of those Washington jaw-fests called a conference committee.

That gives us time to think this through and also to consider the other spin-offs from the ethanol mandate.

Environmentalists are starting to understand that more ethanol requires more corn, which requires more arable land. For example, Brazil is cutting down more rain forests to meet its national ethanol mandates. Incentives for other biofuels make the clear-cutting even worse, since cellulose plants like switch grass have less energy content than corn. They require eight times as many acres to produce equivalent amounts of energy. One estimate says the pending energy bill would require planting enough switch grass to cover the state of Ohio.

Fertilizing, harvesting and transporting such quantities to an ethanol distillery is also energy-intensive, dramatically reducing the supposed benefits to the environment.

There's a basic truth that cannot be altered - each drop of crude oil has an energy content that far surpasses the same amount of corn, switch grass or anything else. As Scotty always said to Captain Kirk, "Ye cannot repeal the laws of physics!" A gallon of ethanol can't take you as far as a gallon of gasoline because there's less power in it. Yet the current Congress won't agree to let America produce more oil from places like Alaska or from offshore - or let us build more refineries or nuclear powerplants

On the other hand, ethanol has a big and successful lobby. Having its champion state, Iowa, as the first place to hold a presidential contest also discourages contenders from picking a fight against ethanol.

As a Heritage Foundation study concluded, the costs of the ethanol mandate are substantial, while the benefits are small at best. We're paying the price with tax money, with higher fuel prices and with higher food prices.

Yes, corn is great chicken feed. But the cost of ethanol is not. This Thanksgiving Tax is nothing to be thankful for.

Only One Candidate Is Truly Pro-Life

From PRO-LIFE Blogs

We live in a country that revolves around rights and freedoms. We have the right to make certain choices about our lives, we have the freedom to do so. However, those rights and those freedoms come to an end when they affect someone else's rights. Our freedoms do not give us the right to take someone else's right to their own property by stealing. Our freedoms do not give us the right to drink irresponsibly, get behind the wheel of a car, and kill someone in an accident. Our freedoms do not give us the right to kill, and take someone else's right to live. That is the foundation of this country, and the foundation of our Constitution. Our Constitution is written to protect the natural, God-given rights that we possess. It also gives certain rights to States, and this is a very important aspect of our Constitution, but it is an important Civics lesson to learn that the rights of States do not come before human rights. That is why the law of the whole land, the Constitution, defends human rights for all the states to recognize. For those of us who believe that unborn children are human beings, and deserving of the right to live, we must realize how crucial the Constitution is in the debate. It is the Constitution that is written to protect human rights, and it is by the Constitution that we argue unborn children should have the right to live. Some argue that the decision should be left up to the states, but this goes against the Constitution's main point: That the role of government is to defend rights, and no state can take them away. Some argue that we should overturn Roe v. Wade, but it must be understood that overturning Roe v. Wade will not outlaw abortion, it will merely give states the opportunity to choose.

Of these presidential candidates, only ONE consistently believes in a federal ban on abortion:

Rudy Giuliani

Fred Thompson

Duncan Hunter

Mitt Romney

Mike Huckabee

John McCain

Can you guess which one it is?

Let's investigate:

Rudy Giuliani: No. Rudy is certainly pro-choice, "I'm very, very passionate about abortion and the whole issue of abortion. But it leads me to a conclusion, which is I oppose it. That's a principle I've held forever, and I'll hold it forever. That's not going to change. But I also believe that in a society like ours, where people have very different consciences about this, it's best for us to respect each other's differences and allow for choice."

Source: Fox News Sunday, 2007 presidential candidate interviews May 14, 2007

Mitt Romney: No. "I'd love to have an America that didn't have abortion. But that's not what the American people [want] right now. And so I'd like to see Roe v. Wade overturned and allow the states to put in place pro-life legislation. I recognize that for many people, that is considered an act of murder, to have an abortion. It is without question the taking of a human life. And I believe that a civilized society must respect the sanctity of the human life."

Source: 2007 GOP debate at UNH, sponsored by Fox News Sep 5, 2007

Mitt Romney has said that he supports a Constitutional amendment, but here he seems to be indicating that he doesn't. Mitt Romney has also flip-flopped on many issues and whether he can be trusted is questionable.

Mike Huckabee: No. In February 1995, Huckabee supported revising the GOP abortion plank to let states decide their own abortion laws.

"The issue divides strongly committed pro-life and pro-choice Republicans but is not a central issue to most other Republicans. A possible platform revision long under discussion would say the Republican Party, 'unlike the Democratic Party, does not stand for abortion on demand and is basically a pro-life party.' In the spirit of federalism, the proposed GOP revision also would replace the abortion amendment with a statement saying the issue should be left up to the individual state legislatures to deal with as each sees fit. 'That's exactly what we have looked for, and if it's left up to the states, more of them are going to put some restrictions on abortion,' Arkansas Lt. Gov. Mike Huckabee said in an interview after appearing on a conference panel yesterday." (Ralph Z. Hallow, "Conservatives Hold Fire On Abortion," Washington Times, 2/12/95)

And in an April 2006 interview with the blog "Right Wing News" Huckabee indicated that abortion decisions should be left to the States.

John Hawkins [Right Wing News]: Switching gears again, do you think we should overturn Roe v. Wade?

Mike Huckabee: It would please me because I think Roe v. Wade is based on a real stretch of Constitutional application -- that somehow there is a greater privacy issue in the abortion concern -- than there is a human life issue -- and that the federal government should be making that decision as opposed to states making that decision. So, I've never felt that it was a legitimate manner in which to address this and, first of all, it should be left to the states, the 10th Amendment, but secondly, to somehow believe that the taking of an innocent, unborn human life is about privacy and not about that unborn life is ludicrous. (www.rightwingnews.com/interviews/huckabee.php)

(From The Christian News Wire: http://www.christiannewswire.com/news/232094841.html)

Fred Thompson: No. Look at this video, where Fred agrees that he does NOT support a Constitutional amendment but supports merely leaving it to the states: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWBX1Hch1tc and merely means to abolish Roe v. Wade.

John McCain: No. "I'd love to see a point where Roe vs. Wade is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe vs. Wade, which would then force women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations." [ Source: Ron Fournier, Associated Press Aug 24, 1999]

John McCain does not even support overturning Roe v. Wade, much less a federal ban. However, he seems to believe that overturning Roe v. Wade DOES include a federal ban on abortion, WHICH IT DOES NOT.

Last but not least:

Duncan Hunter: YES

"I would amend the U.S. Constitution and provide blanket protection to all unborn children from the moment of conception by prohibiting any state or federal law that denies the personhood of the unborn.
Likewise, I have also introduced the Right to Life Act, which would legally define "personhood" as the moment of conception and, therefore, guarantee all constitutional rights and protections, including life, to the unborn without utilizing a constitutional amendment." [www.gohunter08.com]

Duncan Hunter wrote a bill called the Life at Conception Act, that would define life at conception ensuring that the 14th amendment applies to unborn children in defending life. You can read about the bill here: http://www.prolifealliance.com/life%20at%20conception%20act.htm

He has a 100% rating from the National Right to Life, and in all 26 years of experience in Congress he has never changed his mind.

Vote for a candidate that walks the walk, and really believes in life and our human rights: Duncan Hunter 08.

"We have the duty to protect the life of an unborn child."
- Ronald Reagan

UPDATE:
For those who would deny that Ronald Reagan would support reversing roevwade and/or a bill protecting the unborn as Rep Hunter has authored... I direct you HERE.
He suggests exactly what Duncan Hunter has proposed.

Christians Beware Of Mike Huckabee

by Chuck Baldwin
Grass Revolt
November 2, 2007
"With Christian conservatives trying to scramble to find a Republican presidential candidate they can support, some of them seem to be coalescing around former Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee. Janet Folger, especially, seems to be trumpeting his candidacy. But is Mike Huckabee someone Christian conservatives should be supporting? Not everyone thinks so.

Randy Minton, chairman of the Arkansas chapter of Phyllis Schlafly’s national Eagle Forum, said, “We called him a pro-life, pro-gun liberal, when I was in the state legislature and he was governor.” Phyllis Schlafly herself was even more direct.

President and Founder of Eagle Forum, Phyllis Schlafly, said this about Governor Huckabee: “He destroyed the conservative movement in Arkansas, and left the Republican Party a shambles.” She went on to say, “Yet some of the same evangelicals who sold us on George W. Bush as a ‘compassionate conservative’ are now trying to sell us on Mike Huckabee.”

Even one of Huckabee’s strongest supporters within the Religious Right, Pastor Rick Scarborough, head of Vision America, admitted, “Mike has always sought the validation of elites.” Of course, my question for Rick Scarborough is, With an indictment such as that, how can you continue to support Mike Huckabee?

According to an opinion piece written by John Fund in the Wall Street Journal, “Paul Pressler, a former Texas judge who led the conservative Southern Baptist revolt, told me, ‘I know of no conservative he [Huckabee] appointed while he headed the Arkansas Baptist Convention.’”

Fund went on to say that “Mr. Huckabee’s reluctance to surround himself with conservatives was evident as governor, when he kept many agency heads appointed by Bill Clinton.”

Fund also said this about Huckabee: “‘He’s just like Bill Clinton in that he practices management by news cycle,’ a former top Huckabee aide told me. ‘As with Clinton there was no long-term planning, just putting out fires on a daily basis. One thing I’ll guarantee is that won’t lead to competent conservative governance.’”

Mike Huckabee is also terrible on immigration. According to Jim Boulet, Jr., executive director of English First, “Rudy Giuliani spent years defending the right of New York City to remain a sanctuary for illegal aliens. Yet Giuliani was a veritable Lou Dobbs Jr. on illegal immigration in comparison to Mike Huckabee.”

Regarding Huckabee’s stance on immigration, Mr. Minton said, “Until of late, he has been an open-borders guy on immigration–amnesty, the whole works. As governor, he wanted to give free college scholarships to all illegals.”

Minton’s assertion is backed up by Daniel Larison at The American Conservative. He said, “Like his fellow presidential candidate [who recently dropped out of the race], Sen. Sam Brownback, Huckabee regards it as his Christian duty to help subvert and liberalize U.S. immigration laws. Together, they embrace the notion that fidelity to the Gospel requires privileging the interests of non-citizens over those of fellow citizens.”

Ann Coulter agrees: “On illegal immigration, Huckabee makes George Bush sound like Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO). Huckabee has compared illegal aliens to slaves brought here in chains from Africa, saying, ‘I think, frankly, the Lord is giving us a second chance to do better than we did before.’

“Toward that end, when an Arkansas legislator introduced a bill that would prevent illegal aliens from voting and receiving state benefits, Huckabee denounced the bill, saying it would rile up ‘those who are racist and bigots.’

“He also made the insane point that companies such as Toyota would not invest in Arkansas if the state didn’t allow non-citizens to vote, because it would ’send the message that, essentially, “If you don’t look like us, talk like us and speak like us, we don’t want you.”‘

“Like all the (other) Democratic candidates for President, he supports a federal law to ban smoking–unless you’re an illegal alien smoking at a Toyota plant.”

A former state lawmaker, Minton also said, that Huckabee was not a “fiscally conservative Republican.” Rather, Huckabee was regarded as just another liberal “tax and spender” in fiscal matters. This is in direct opposition to Huckabee’s boast of “90 tax cuts during his tenure.” And the facts seem to validate Minton, not Huckabee.

An Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration report showed a “net tax increase of $505 million, a figure adjusted for inflation and economic growth” on Huckabee’s watch.

That Huckabee is a liberal “tax and spender” is also affirmed by Tom Roeser. According to Roeser, “[Huckabee] hiked state spending 65.3%, from 1996 to 2004. He supported five tax increases, leading the ‘Club for Growth’ to call him a liberal in disguise . . .”

Roeser also points out that “The Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank with heavy ties to the national GOP, gives him an F grade for spending and taxes in 2006 and an overall grade of D in his governorship. During his tenure, the number of state employees increased over 20% and Arkansas’ general obligation debt rose by almost $1 billion.”

Furthermore, according to the Washington Times, “Until recently, he [Huckabee] had refused to sign the famous no-tax pledge offered to candidates by Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.”

In spite of Huckabee’s proven big-government, big-spending, and pro-amnesty record, however, some Christian conservatives are falling for his conservative rhetoric. It seems that all a Republican candidate has to do is start talking “pro-life” and “pro-marriage” and he or she will gain the support of certain Christian conservatives.

First it was Bob Jones, III endorsing the liberal former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, and now it is Janet Folger endorsing the liberal former governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee. Why any Christian leader would want to support a man with such a dubious record truly escapes me.

Christians need to beware of Mike Huckabee. He is not a conservative. Even worse, he is not a constitutionalist. He is an opportunist, however. This is demonstrated by the fact that many of his supporters are openly posturing (with Huckabee’s consent, obviously) for an opportunity to run Huckabee as a potential Vice Presidential candidate with either Giuliani or Romney at the top of the ticket.

Let me ask the reader something. How could a principled pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, pro-Constitution conservative be willing to run on a ticket with a liberal presidential candidate such as Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney?
That’s right, he couldn’t.

I say again, beware of Mike Huckabee!"

Oklahomans favor Edwards, Huckabee?

The McCarville Report Online has this on favorites in the Sooner state at this point in the process.
"Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, a Republican, and former Senator John Edwards, a Democrat, appear to be early favorites as Oklahoma prepares for its presidential primary contest on “Super Tuesday” February 5th. Read all of Tulsa World writer Mick Hinton's story at http://www.tulsaworld.com/."
Of course the Tulsa World doesn't mention that this claim of support is entirely based on speculation and other media reports, not any polling done in the state.
However it does provide another great example of how the media spins information to lead readers in a particular direction without using any facts in the process.

My questions for Oklahomans are ...
1- You didn't learn anything from the last slick Arkansas Governor you elected to the White House?
2- Illegal immigration not an issue for you?
3- You want higher taxes huh?

Mike Huckabee is NOT the conservative he is being advertised as, by any stretch of the imagination.
Research and investigate Oklahoma... the primary has NEVER been more important than this one.
Who's the biggest tax raiser, Clinton or Huckabee?

Iraq Facts For Dummies

If it seems like too much 'work' to read the previous post on this, and you like pretty pictures... perhaps these 3 graphs will get through to you.
With much appreciation and thanks to Engram at Back Talk Blog.

First, let's define how you go about measuring "success".
John Murtha-"Are the incidents decreased? No. Have the civilian deaths gone down? No. Have the American deaths increased? Yes. That's the way you measure whether we're making progress."

Data from the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count (not a rightwing group)

Month-to-month data can be noisy, so here is a similar chart with each bar now representing the average of the last 3 months:

And what was it John Murtha said was the other measure of success...?

Again, what was it John Murtha said just a few months ago?
"Are the incidents decreased?"
"Have the civilian deaths gone down?"
"Have the American deaths increased?"
"That's the way you measure whether we're making progress."

Indeed, that is how you measure progress (not by "political benchmarks"), and that's why even he is now forced to admit that the troop surge is working:

WASHINGTON — No. 2 House Republican Roy Blunt challenged Democrats on Friday to pass a $50 billion war spending package, pouncing on new remarks by Democratic Rep. John Murtha who said, "I think the surge is working."
Gee, I wonder where he got a crazy idea like that?
Now maybe you would like to read the post below and get "the rest of the story"... or just stay in denial, your choice.

Casualties In Iraq: November 2007

It's time to check in on how that big 'ol civil war in Iraq is going since the Democrats and the Clinton News Network or the liberal blob-o-sphere sure won't talk about it.
Gee, I wonder why that is?

"History will record where the Democrats stood when Iraq was suffering through its darkest hour."

From Engram at Back Talk Blog:
Back in July, Wolf Blitzer interviewed left wing anti-war icon John Murtha. Here is some of what he had to say:
REP. JOHN MURTHA (D), PENNSYLVANIA: Nice to be with you, Wolf.

BLITZER: I'm going to play a little excerpt of what the president said earlier today and get your reaction. Listen to him.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BUSH: I don't think Congress ought to be running the war. I think they ought to be funding our troops. I'm certainly interested in their opinion. But trying to run a war through resolution is a prescription for failure as far as I'm concerned and we can't afford to fail.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BLITZER: All right. What do you say to the president?

MURTHA: Well it's delusional to say the least. As I said earlier, and you heard me say it, it's a failed policy wrapped in illusion. Nothing's gotten better. Incidents have increased. We have had more Americans killed in the last four months than any other period during the war.
...
So, our troops are caught in a civil war. As I said over and over again, it can't be won militarily. There can only be a diplomatic effort. I think this surge is a perfect example where we aren't making any progress, and we've got to start to redeploy the troops as quickly as possible.
...
MURTHA: I don't acknowledge there has been any progress made. Maybe in Baghdad. But it just breaks out someplace else. We called for extra troops two years ago. We put money in for 30,000 troops. They haven't even been able to raise the 30,000 troops they have. So they have to break all their guidelines. But there's no progress being made. And the way you measure it is, is the security itself.

Are the incidents decreased? No. Have the civilian deaths gone down? No. Have the American deaths increased? Yes. That's the way you measure whether we're making progress.

That's the way you measure progress? You don't say.

Other Democrats were equally prophetic:

"The surge was supposed to bring stability.... It hasn't and it won't," Ted Kennedy said on May 1. "The evidence is clear it is not happening and it will not happen," Dodd said May 15 of a potential American victory. Durbin said the day after: "This Senate knows that the administration's policy in Iraq has failed." Senator Joseph Biden agreed. "The surge has not worked and will not work," he said on June 1. And in a joint letter to the president on June 13, Reid and Pelosi said, "As many had foreseen, the escalation has failed to produce the intended results."
...
As Harry Reid put it on July 9, "Democrats and military experts and the American people know the president's current strategy is not working and we cannot wait until September to act." As Dianne Feinstein put it, "Today, a majority of the Senate sees that the surge is not working. ... Do we change course now or do we wait until September... I believe the answer is clear."

Hillary Clinton also weighed in and had this to say:

WASHINGTON — Senator Clinton squared off yesterday with her possible challenger for the White House in 2012, General David Petraeus, and came closer than any of her colleagues to calling the commander of the multinational forces in Iraq a liar.

Using blunter language than any other Democrat in the last two days, Mrs. Clinton told General Petraeus that his progress report on Iraq required "a willing suspension of disbelief."

Those are your liberal leaders characterizing the effectiveness of the troop surge -- the very people you think should be in charge of national security. And their point was not merely that the surge wasn't working. They wanted everyone to also know that, in their expert opinion, the surge would never work.

Were they right? Here is my monthly tally of civilian casualties in Iraq based on the data at Iraq Coalition Casualty Count (with necessary corrections described here):

As always, the black bar shows when al Qaeda finally succeeded in provoking the Shiite militas to start killing Sunnis (in an effort to stop al Qaeda's suicide bombers). The dark purple bars show the months during which the surge began to unfold (in February) and then became operational (in June). As you can see, civilian casualties plummeted in September, then they dropped even further in October, and now they have dropped still further in November. In fact, casualties dropped even more than this chart suggests. In November, there were only 3 incidents involving more than 15 civilian casualties. Two of those involved 30 casualties each, and neither incident actually occurred in November. In both cases, mass graves of decomposed bodies were discovered. These people had been killed by al Qaeda savages in earlier months, so it would not be unreasonable to take another 60 deaths off the already low November total.

Month-to-month data can be noisy, so here is a similar chart with each bar now representing the average of the last 3 months:

As al Qaeda has been routed in Iraq, and as former Sunni enemies join our cause, U.S. military deaths from hostile fire have also plummeted:

Remember the words of liberal anti-war icon John Murtha:

"Are the incidents decreased? No. Have the civilian deaths gone down? No. Have the American deaths increased? Yes. That's the way you measure whether we're making progress."

I'm frankly amazed that al Qaeda has not been able to pull off a single spectacular mass-casualty attack for 3 straight months. They are undoubtedly highly motivated to do so, in part because they know that Democrats in Washington are veritable puppets on a string. Does that sound harsh? It doesn't to me. Harry Reid's declaration of America's ignominious defeat in Iraq came in direct response to this attack by al Qaeda on innocent Shiite civilians in Baghdad:

Suspected Qaeda bombs kill nearly 200 in Baghdad

Wed Apr 18, 2007

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Suspected al Qaeda militants killed nearly 200 people in a wave of car bombings in Baghdad on Wednesday, including one that was the single deadliest attack in the Iraqi capital since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Here is Harry Reid's response the very next day:

Iraq war is 'lost': US Democrat leader

Apr 19

The war in Iraq "is lost" and a US troop surge is failing to bring peace to the country, the leader of the Democratic majority in the US Congress, Harry Reid, said Thursday.

"I believe ... that this war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything, as is shown by the extreme violence in Iraq this week," Reid told journalists.

In other words, al Qaeda commits an atrocity, and the Democrats immediately call for surrender -- right on cue and in exact accordance with al Qaeda's nefarious plan. While behaving in that manner, the Democrats also repeatedly and eerily denied that al Qaeda was a significant factor in Iraq. To them, it was all just a big ol' civil war based on ancient hostilities between Shiites and Sunnis. Here is Democratic Presidential candidate Christopher Dodd nicely summing up the creepy Democratic stance that has been in effect for the last several years:

Again, this is a civil war going on in Iraq. This is not the United States versus Al Qaida. It's Shia versus Sunnis tearing each other apart. It's gone on for centuries, but particularly here right now.

All Democrats and most Americans actually believed this nonsense. And, of course, the mainstream media (especially, New York Times, of course) bent over backwards to explain how simplistic Bush was being for emphasizing the indisputable fact that we were at war with al Qaeda in Iraq:

July 13, 2007
Bush Distorts Qaeda Links, Critics Assert

By MICHAEL R. GORDON and JIM RUTENBERG

BAGHDAD, July 12 — In rebuffing calls to bring troops home from Iraq, President Bush on Thursday employed a stark and ominous defense. “The same folks that are bombing innocent people in Iraq,” he said, “were the ones who attacked us in America on September the 11th, and that’s why what happens in Iraq matters to the security here at home.”

It is an argument Mr. Bush has been making with frequency in the past few months, as the challenges to the continuation of the war have grown. On Thursday alone, he referred at least 30 times to Al Qaeda or its presence in Iraq.

But his references to Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, and his assertions that it is the same group that attacked the United States in 2001, have greatly oversimplified the nature of the insurgency in Iraq and its relationship with the Qaeda leadership.

And that wasn't all. The Times also weighed in with this:

Seeing Al Qaeda Around Every Corner

By CLARK HOYT
Published: July 8, 2007

AS domestic support for the war in Iraq continues to melt away, President Bush and the United States military in Baghdad are increasingly pointing to a single villain on the battlefield: Al Qaeda.
...
“Nobody knows how many different Islamist extremist groups make up the insurgency” in Iraq, said Anthony H. Cordesman of the bipartisan Center for Strategic and International Studies. “Even when you talk about Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, the idea of somehow it is the center of the insurgency is almost absurd.”

You see, it's all much more complicated than that cowboy in the White House can appreciate with his alcohol-addled brain, and that's precisely why the troop surge is destined to fail. Liberals, whose brains are uniquely able to appreciate complexity and nuance, fully understood that failure was the only possible outcome. And they were only too happy to tell you all about it.

How quickly things can change. The entire left (i.e., virtually all Democrats and their comrades in the mainstream media) are mystified by the dramatic reduction in violence that we've seen in Iraq over the last 3 months. If al Qaeda was not a factor -- that is, if it really was just a big ol' civil war -- how it could it be that turning the Sunni tribes against al Qaeda coupled with a troop surge offensive directed at al Qaeda achieved such spectacular success? It's incomprehensible. And make no mistake about it: offensive operations associated with the troop surge were directed at al Qaeda according to this interview with the man himself (i.e., with General Petraeus):

What is your priority in the surge operation?

"It is to disrupt al-Qaeda and its ability to conduct sensational attacks and to try to continue the cycle of violence, which they have been trying to do all along. In addition, they are attempting try establish a real al-Qaeda sanctuary in Iraq, a caliphate."

What about the leadership in Iraq?

"It is still led by foreigners called al-Qaeda Senior Leadership (AQSL). Our assessment is that this is the central front for al-Qaeda. They have a global war of terror, and Iraq is the central front. Whether you like it or not. That is something that the leaders of the intelligence community in the West and our joint special operations commander agree on and that is why he is here two thirds or three quarters of his time. It is certainly one very important consideration in looking at Iraq."

Democrats who denied all of this are now bewildered by the dramatic turnaround in Iraq. Despite being wrong about everything, you can be sure that they will now knowingly explain how the incredible improvement in Iraq has nothing at all to do with (a) the troop surge, (b) George Bush or (c) our apparent victory over al Qaeda. Instead, the remarkable progress was achieved because [INSERT LIBERAL FANTASY HERE].

Had the Democrats gotten their way, we'd undoubtedly be witnessing more than 1000 extra civilian deaths per month. It's ironic that people who think of themselves as being especially "decent" progressives were openly advocating that we simply stand back and permit genocide of innocent Iraqis. In effect, that's what they angrily demanded, but I doubt they will be able to assimilate that painful reality into their self image. Instead, they'll concoct a fantasy according to which the reduction in casualties would have happened in the absence of the troop surge (despite the fact that they explicitly predicted the exact opposite, as documented above), or they'll express absolute certainty that this is merely a temporary break in the action (even though they have already proven their inability to predict what will happen in Iraq). But the painful and inescapable truth is that they openly supported a plan to stand back and allow genocide to unfold before the horrified eyes of the world, and they knew exactly what they were doing. Being the decent people they are, they felt OK about it because they knew the blame would be placed on Bush. They were right about that, of course, but that doesn't excuse them for what they did. The American public may never awaken to all of this (because of the media we have), but if the success continues -- and no one can say for sure that it will -- history will record where the Democrats stood when Iraq was suffering through its darkest hour.

Huckabee's Misguided "Compassion"

From FrontPage Magazine:
By Don Feder
GrassTopsUSA.com |

The problem with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee isn't his funny name, which brings to mind a character in a Hanna-Barbera cartoon. (What kind of a name is Mitt, anyway?)

It's not the fact that he strums a guitar or that, other than governing Arkansas for a decade, his principal claim to fame is losing 110-lbs.

What scares me about Huckabee is that he's a practitioner of the ghastly art of political compassion. He could even be one of those compassionate conservatives we've heard so much about -- except he's not a conservative.

Huckabee's stock is rising. Friday's Rasmussen Poll has him among the top tier candidates for the GOP nomination. With 12%, the former governor is behind Giuliani, Thompson and McCain (at 14%) but ahead of Deep-Pockets Mitt (with 11%).

Understandably, Huckabee wowed them at the recent Values Voter Washington Briefing, sponsored by Family Research Council. For those who attended the conference and voted (instead of voting online), Huckabee won with 51%.

Superficially, Huckabee looks like the ideal candidate for social conservatives -- pro-life, anti-gay marriage and a Baptist minister to boot. A friend of mine who's an evangelical and a Beltway pundit says a lot of it comes down to tribal politics. The religious right, which is dominated by evangelicals, looks at Huckabee and sees one of its own. It is mistaken.

Abortion and marriage are make-or-break issues for me. But, uncompassionate conservative that I am, I also care about taxes and spending, secure borders, the economy, crime and the Constitution.

I'm not alone. Conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly says Huckabee "destroyed the conservative movement in Arkansas, and left the Republican Party in shambles," Schlafly charges, "Yet some of the same evangelicals who sold us on George W. Bush as a 'compassionate conservative' are now trying to sell us on Huckabee." Call the Better Business Bureau.

Richard Viguerie, as principled and tough-minded as anyone on the right, observes, "But while Gov. Huckabee stands strong on some issues like abortion that are important to social conservatives, a careful examination of his record as governor reveals that he is just another wishy-washy Republican who enthusiastically promotes big government" -- which is why Time Magazine thought Huckabee was one of the nation's five best governors. Time doesn't hand out awards for cutting taxes and reducing spending.

During his years in Little Rock, Huckabee raised the state's sales tax by 37%, the gas tax by 16% and the cigarette tax by 103% (all fall particularly hard on the poor). State spending went up a staggering 65.3% -- three times the inflation rate. The state's workforce grew by 20% and Arkansas' general obligation debt increased $1 billion.

Conservatives most familiar with the man are the most skeptical of his conservative credentials. At its July convention, the Arkansas Republican Assembly, which represents the state party's right-wing, took a presidential preference straw poll. Thompson swept the field with 86%.

Betsy Hagan, Arkansas director of Schlafly's Eagle Forum, says that outside of a few key social issues, Huckabee governed as a liberal. "Just like Bill Clinton, he will charm you, but don't be surprised if he takes a completely different turn in office," Hagan cautions.

Huckabee is a sucker for social spending. In April 2006, he raised the state's minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.25 an hour, levying yet another tax on businesses and consumers -- one that destroys entry-level jobs.

Huckabee is particularly proud of his ArKids First program, which greatly expanded government-paid health insurance for children. Compassionate? Sure -- except it's one more small step on the road to socialized medicine -- which hasn't worked that well for the Brits and Canadians who've died waiting for operations, due to the inevitable shortage of medical services in a state-run system.

Huckabee calls the notorious No Child (Bureaucrat) Left Behind program the greatest education reform in his lifetime.

It all goes back to Huckabee's fatal flaw -- the Big C. The governor is one of those Republicans who's desperate to be loved. He craves the establishment's approval and gets an emotional high by doing good, invariably at someone else's expense.

Huckabee supports a mandatory cap on the release of greenhouse gases. "It goes to the moral issue," the governor intones. "We have a responsibility to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions...." This, even though he's unsure that C0-2 emissions actually have anything to do with global warming. "But whether there is or there isn't (a human factor in climate change) , it doesn't release us from the responsibility to be good stewards of the environment...It's a spiritual issue. The earth belongs to God. I have no right to destroy it."

Good stewards also have a responsibility to consider the consequences of junk science. In the 1960s, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (the era's An Inconvenient Truth) convinced governments to ban DDT as toxic to humans. In the Third World, mosquitoes multiplied. So did malaria and typhus. Since 1972, 100 million have died of these preventable diseases, mostly in Africa, due to political stewardship.

Does God want us to destroy the U.S. economy? Does He want us to sit in darkened homes, warmed only by thoughts of the imaginary benefits conferred on the penguins and polar bears? Huckabee is an acolyte of the Church of Gore because it feels good -- it makes him feel morally superior to all of those energy-profligate conservatives who -- by not embracing this pious fraud -- desecrate the Gospel of Eco-Doom.

Huckabee also backs the so-called DC voting rights bill, telling reporters that DC residents are "American citizens. They pay taxes and it just doesn't seem right that someone could be at least partially disenfranchised."

If residents of the District of Columbia were mostly Caucasians, instead of black, would the left care? Would Huckabee? Jesse Jackson and his gang have turned this into a civil rights, meaning a race, issue.

No representation in return for getting the national government in your backyard -- that's the bargain that was made at America's founding.

There are all kinds of goodies derived from residing in the District. One way or another, most residents make a living from Uncle Sugar. For that, Washingtonians give up direct representation in Congress. If they simply cannot live without the bliss of voting for Congress-things, they can move a few miles into either Virginia or Maryland and vote in Congressional elections to their heart's content.

His regard for DC denizens is exceeded only by Huckabee's affection for aliens of the illegal persuasion.

When there was a bill before the Arkansas legislature to require proof of citizenship to vote and to cut off most government services to illegals, Huckabee did a passable impression of Linda Chavez, claiming the measure "inflames those who are racists and bigots and makes them think there's a real problem. But there's not."

Twelve million to fifteen million illegal aliens? More coming every day? Hospitals closed and schools severely overburdened? No problemo!

Huckabee now tries to rationalize that smear, generously allowing he does not think everyone who's concerned about criminals and terrorists infiltrating our porous borders -- not all who resent subsidies for the horde who are here illegally -- are the moral equivalent of Nazis and nightriders.

What's behind this gratuitous insult to patriotic Americans? Can't you guess?

In a 2003 radio address, Huckabee told the citizens of Arkansas: "I looked into the eyes of immigrant Mexican children and was moved. These children often don't have enough to eat, don't have good clothes and don't have a dry place to sleep... And I was reminded we can give something back by offering a helping hand to those who follow the American dream along Interstate 30 and Interstate 40 into Arkansas." Like Hillary, he's doing it for the kids -- and, in the process, throwing away the best issue the Republican Party will have next year.

Eventually, all compassionate politicians get around to slobbering over violent felons. Huckabee is no exception. Wayne Dumond served seven years of a life plus-20-year sentence for the kidnapping/rape of a 17-year-old cheerleader. Dumond claims that while he was awaiting trial, men broke into his home and castrated him. Sadly, he survived.

Shortly after he became governor, Dumond's pardon application crossed Huckabee's desk.

While denying the pardon, Huckabee helped with the parole board by sending the rapist a personal letter disclosing, "My desire is that you be released from prison. I feel that parole is the best way for your reintroduction to society to take place." A 2002 article in the Arkansas Times reports Huckabee's staff worked behind the scenes to secure the rapist's release. Was Huckabee moved after looking into Dumond's eyes and seeing another of society's victims who was just following the American dream?

Ashley Stevens, who Dumond raped, told Huckabee, "If you ever let him out, he's going to do it again." Huckabee was unmoved, even when Stevens thrust her face inches from his and told him: "This is how close I was to Dumond's face for an hour. I'll never forget his face, and you'll never forget mine."

None of that dissuaded Mr. Compassion. Wouldn't you know it, the year after the parole board reintroduced Dumond into society, he moved to Missouri where he sexually assaulted and murdered a 39-year-old woman.

To this day, Huckabee is in a state of denial (unfortunately for him, not one of the early primary states) regarding his role in this tragedy, insisting, "My only official action was to deny his clemency." In terms of taking responsibility for their actions, Huckabee and Hillary have more in common than at first meets the eye.

What traits should we seek in a president? Compassion is way down on my list -- well below guts, integrity, farsightedness, determination and patriotism.

Huckabee has bought into the left's definition of compassion, a mushy mix of sentimentality and victimology. The avatar of this species of compassion is Jimmy Carter -- Nobel laureate, builder of homes for the poor, anti-American agitator who accuses Israel of racism, (like Huckabee, a Baptist given to homilies), and easily America's worst president in the post-war era.

Political compassion comes at a price. Compassion for the recipients of social spending hurts taxpayers, including the struggling middle class and working poor. (It hurts recipients too by addicting them to the dole.) Compassion for illegal immigrants hurts the victims of criminal aliens, not to mention the Americans who see their national unity slipping away (eroded by those who refuse to learn our language or identify with our country). Compassion for criminals is an affront to their victims -- past and future.

Mike Huckabee, who's big on Bible quotes, should contemplate the Talmudic adage: Kindness to the cruel is cruelty to the kind.

Huckabee lacks the organization and finances to win the nomination. As of September 30, he had $650,000 cash on hand, compared to $16.6 million for Giuliani, $9.2 million for Romney, and $7.1 million for Thompson. Money isn't everything. But, with the nomination process front-loaded and the need to run campaigns in a dozen states simultaneously, it is indispensable.

It's only in the past week that Huckabee, due to the Iowa and FRC conference straw-polls, moved into double digits in national polling -- bumps he won't get again.

Huckabee will not be the Republican nominee in 2008, for which we should be exceedingly grateful.

Who's The Biggest Tax Raiser, Clinton or Huckabee?

Ernie Dumas writes:

- Increased the cigarette tax from 17.75 cents a pack to 21 cents a pack (Act 399 of 1983)

- Increased the cigarette tax by a penny a pack (Act 1211 of 1991)

- Levied a 2 percent tax on certain tourism items like admission to theme parks (Act 38 of 1989)

- Increased excise taxes on mixed drinks sold for on-premises consumption (not wine or beer) (Act 844 of 1983 and Act 908 of 1989)

- Increased motor fuel taxes by 1 cent a gallon (1979)

- Increased motor fuel taxes by 4 cents a gallon (Act 456 of 1985) (Clinton vetoed the bill but the legislature overrode his veto.)

- Increased the tax on motor fuels by 5 cents a gallon

- Increased motor vehicle registration fees, 1979 (subsequently repealed)
Huckabee tax increases

- Imposed an income tax surcharge of 3 percent on tax liabilities of individuals and domestic and foreign corporations (Act 38, 1st special session of 2003). (It was temporary until revenues improved. The legislature repealed it in 2005.)

- Increased the sales tax by 1/8 of one percent by initiated act (but it was a personal campaign by Huckabee, who campaigned across the state for it and took a celebrated bass boat trip for 4 days down the Arkansas River holding press conferences in each river city to urge passage of the act)

- Increased the sales tax by one-half of 1 percent (Act 1492 of 1999)

- Increased the sales tax by 7/8ths of 1 percent and expand the sales tax to many services previously exempt from the tax (Act 107, 2nd special session of 2003)

- Collected a 2 percent tax on chewing tobacco, cigars, package tobacco, cigarette papers and snuff (Act 434 of 1997)

- Levied an additional excise tax of 7 percent on tobacco (Act 38 of 1st special session of 2003)

- Increased the tax on cigarette and tobacco permits (Act 1337 of 1997)

- Increased the tax on cigarette and tobacco – cigarettes by $1.25 per thousand cigarettes and 2 percent of the manufacturers’ selling price on tobacco products (Act 434 of 1997)

- Increased the tax on cigarettes by 25 cents a pack (Act 38, 1st special session of 2003)

- Levied a 3 percent excise tax on all retail sales of beer (Act 1841 of 2001 and extended by Act 272 of 2003 and Act 2188 of 2005)

- Revived the 4 percent mixed drink tax of 1989 and added a 4 percent tax on private clubs (Act 1274 of 2005)

- Increased the tax on gasoline by 3 cents a gallon (Act 1028 of 1999)

- Increased the tax on diesel by 4 cents a gallon (Act 1028 of 1999) Note: Contrary to what Huckabee has said repeatedly in debates, speeches and TV shows, the 1999 gasoline and diesel taxes were not submitted to the voters and approved by 80 per cent of them. It was never submitted to a vote. It was the governor’s bill and it became law without a vote of the people. What the voters did approve in 1999 was a bond issue for interstate highway reconstruction but it did not involve a tax increase. Existing taxes and federal receipts were pledged to retire the bonds.

- Increased the driver’s license by $6 a person, from $14 to $20 (Act 1500 of 2001)
So which raised taxes more? It is hard to quantify. If you measured the increases in the revenue stream, the Huckabee tax cuts far exceeded Clinton’s but that would be unfair because the economy had grown and the same penny of tax would produce far more under Huckabee.

But if you look at the major taxes, I see the aggregate Huckabee taxes as greater, especially if you deduct the 4 cent gasoline and diesel taxes that Clinton vetoed in 1985 and that the legislature enacted over his veto.

Anyway, the sales tax is the big revenue producer. Both raised it by 1.5 cents on the dollar and both expanded it to cover a myriad of services. Clinton raised motor fuel taxes a little more, Huckabee cigarette taxes a lot more.

A further note: Huckabee claims credit for a major tax cut in 1997, saying it was the first tax cut in Arkansas history (there had been many prior to that) and that he forced the Democratic legislature to curtail its impulse to always raise taxes.

The facts: The omnibus income tax cut bill of 1997 was proposed by Gov. Jim Guy Tucker in the spring of 1996. It had multiple (7) features, all aimed at relief for middle-class families or the elderly. He asked interim legislative committees to expand on his plan. Tucker then resigned before the legislature convened after his conviction on Whitewater-related charges, and Huckabee took office.

At the legislative session that followed, the Democratic caucus of the House (88 of the 100 members) made the Tucker tax cuts its chief program. The bill was introduced with 83 sponsors (all Democrats) and all Democrats voted for it. It was unopposed. Huckabee’s tax cut was to give each taxpayer a check for $25 each fall, saying it would help offset the burden of sales taxes on groceries (the repeal of which he repeatedly opposed). The legislature rejected Huckabee’s plan and passed the Tucker bill. Huckabee signed it into law.

The 94 tax cuts that he said he fathered are similarly misleading. The vast majority of those were the usual exemptions and modifications of various taxes and fees that the legislature enacts every time it meets. They were not a part of Huckabee’s program with a few exceptions. Rather, Democratic legislators sponsored them, usually at the behest of whatever special interest benefited, and Huckabee signed them when they hit his desk. If you did a similar summary of Clinton’s years he could claim probably well over 100 tax cuts. Every Arkansas governor since World War II could claim dozens each.

If you counted all the tax benefits extended to corporations under the incentives enacted by the legislature under Clinton — and they were part of his programs, especially in 1983, 1985 and 1989 — the tax cuts would dwarf those under Huckabee.

Top 3 Issues, Who's The Best?

Okay folks, lets get down to the bottom line on this Presidential thing.
The bottom line is the issues and who can get things done.
The top 3 issues of today are...
1- The War
2- Illegal Immigration/the borders
3- Economy/trade/jobs

Let's start with the war.
Who among all of the candidates on BOTH sides of the isle has the best plan and is most qualified to be Commander in Chief of our military during a war?

Don't take my word for it... in July, (just 4 months ago) a 6 person panel comprised of 2 Democrats, 2 Republicans and 2 Independents in Iowa were asked to decide just that.

July 28, 2007
Which Presidential Candidate Has Best Plan For Iraq?
(Iowa)...........Who scored the highest grade from a unique Iowa political panel?
WHO-TV.com asked six undecided voters all from different cities in the state to "grade" the presidential candidates. The registered voters, two Democrats, two Republicans, and two Independents, were given the answer of one question asked to eleven Presidential candidates. WHO-TV said they were giving the panel the "power of the pen" by letting them grade the respondents. In all, eleven Presidential candidates sent their response to the television station.

The candidates were asked one question, the question that the TV station said was on the minds of many Americans: "What do you think will happen when U.S. troops are withdrawn from Iraq, and what is your strategy to deal with what happens afterward?"

The six-person panel reviewed the answers then graded each candidate's response.
California Congressman Duncan Hunter scored the highest with a grade of 2.66 out of a possible 3.0.
Hunter's response was deemed to be the most favorable of the 11 by the panel.

In his response Hunter noted that in Iraq, America is adhering to a process that our nation has followed for the last 60 years to promote democracy and spread freedom throughout the world. The first step, according to Hunter, is that we stand up a free government; then we stand up a military force capable of protecting that government; and lastly, we leave.

Hunter continued that the U.S. forces are currently in the second phase of this three-step process. This phase requires that Iraq's military acquire the operational experience it needs to mature into a force capable of defending the interests of the Iraqi government and its people. Not only is this phase critical to the continued development of the Iraqi military, but it will also determine when U.S. combat forces can begin rotating out from the battlefield and be replaced by Iraqi forces.

Hunter added, as U.S. forces move from the battlefield, it will then be the responsibility of Iraqi military forces to protect Iraq's freely elected government and its people. The Iraqi military is quickly and steadily maturing, and the security responsibility will soon be entirely theirs. With the training and guidance they continue receiving from U.S. forces, the Iraqi military will be capable and have the confidence to confront existing secular militias, foreign fighters, and terrorists.

Hunter concluded, whether or not Iraq's government holds together will be determined by the success of the Iraqi military. Their continued progress indicates it will succeed and Iraq, with its freely elected government, will exist as a friend of the U.S. and not a state sponsor of terrorism for the coming decades.

Democratic contender Joe Biden, and Republican Sam Brownback both scored 2.5, Republican John McCain received a grade of 2.33, and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton was given a 2.16. For complete results visit http://www.whotv.com/ <http://www.whotv.com/> .

Duncan Hunter served as an Army Ranger in Vietnam.
His son just returned from his second tour in Iraq as a US Marine.
Hunter is the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee.

Next, we have Illegal Immigration-
"If you can get over my fence, we'll sign you up for the Olympics"-Duncan Hunter

Referred to as the "Father of the Border Fence", Duncan Hunter has led the way on enforcing immigration laws while securing the border. He built the 11 miles of that fence south of San Diego which cut illegals coming across by 90% into San Diego and reduced crime by nearly 60%!
No other candidate comes close to matching Duncan Hunter's record on illegal immigration- period.

Economy/trade/jobs...
Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate working to immediately stop China (and the rest of the world) from cheating on trade and is a sponsor of the Fair Trade Agreement which will help America's economy grow and create American jobs in America.
Duncan Hunter is rated as pro-growth and pro-family.
He is a sponsor of the FAIR TAX.
Has a perfect rating from the NRA
Is PRO-LIFE and always has been.
He only has one wife and always has.

He is the one true "Reagan conservative" in the entire field of presidential candidates... the Missouri Republican Assembly said he represents "The Republican Wing of the Republican Party"...what else do you need to know, before realizing that Duncan Hunter is the best qualified candidate to run this country for the next 8 years...period.

If your still not convinced... (From Hunter's Rangers)

Why we Stand With Congressman Duncan Hunter! Well said and Thank You Pissant!

  • No one has done more for the military and wounded vets than Duncan Hunter!
  • No one but Duncan Hunter is more staunchly pro-life -introducing a bill year after year to give the unborn 14th amendment protection.
  • Not one of the candidates running for President in 2008 is more pro gun than Duncan Hunter.
  • No one is more pro tax cuts than Duncan Hunter.
  • Duncan Hunter has been THE #1 driver of missile defense systems since Reagan retired.
  • No one has beat the hell out of the EPA and the ACLU like Duncan Hunter has over the last two decades.

Consider this:

  • Duncan Hunter was the ONLY one to call for Harry Reid’s resignation for his “we lost” comments.
  • Duncan Hunter was the only one to go to the national media and slap down Nancy Pelosi’s idiotic idea of a "15-day ‘Pelosi waiting period,’” for rotating troops into battle.
  • Duncan Hunter was the ONLY one to rush headfirst into defending Gen Peter Pace’s “homosexuality is incompatable” with the military comments that the MSM and democrats were screaming about - he wrote a big piece in the USA Today standing by those comments.
  • Duncan Hunter is the only one I’m aware of that wants to get rid of Don't Ask Don't Tell and go back to a total ban on gays in the military.
  • Duncan Hunter is the only one other than John McCain to volunteer for combat duty in Vietnam - real combat duty.
  • Duncan Hunter is the man that Ronald Reagan sent to Europe to bring them on board with Strategic Defense Initiative—and he succeeded (exceedingly controversial at the time).

There is only one reason that Guantanamo Bay is still open- his name is Duncan Hunter.
There is a primary reason that Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean cases have kept a high profile - Duncan Hunter. There is only one reason we have enough miltary transport hauling capability- Duncan Hunter. There is only one guy who went after CNN to get them tossed out of Iraq for airing enemy propaganda - Duncan Hunter. There was only one reason that Rumsfeld was not able to proceed on reductions in the size of the Army - Duncan Hunter. There is only one reason that President Bush finally agreed to INCREASE the size of the Army and Marine Corps - Duncan Hunter. There is only one reason that the NAFTA efforts of Mexican trucks all over our highways is being halted - Duncan Hunter. And there is only one man that scares China and Iran - Duncan Hunter. There is one man who slapped the ACLU and saved the Mount Soledad Cross - Duncan Hunter. And there was only one politicain to speak at the Eagle Forum sponsored anti-North America Union summit - Duncan Hunter. And ONLY one guy who reversed the Military’s Political Correct policy of not allowing prayers that mention Jesus Christ - you guessed it - Duncan Hunter.

  • Duncan Hunter is the ONLY candidate that is deadly serious about not giving up a shred of sovereignty to international and supra national bodies.
